If anyone has watched the news over the past 24 hours, you may have heard about the flood that hit Calgary and other areas in Alberta, Canada.

Main roadways are closed off (Macleod Trail -- the main road leading to the southern area of the city), and if the river rises a few more feet, there's a good chance the downtown could see major flooding. A local state of emergency has been issued, and things are just a mess.

Pics can be found HERE (http://members.shaw.ca/akari-kanzaki/flood)

(Some aren't the best quality since I was using a lower-end camera as well as my own, but it's still a sight to see).

so, under the bridge, is that a real road? since i dont' know what it looks like normally, the full effect doesn't hit me.

I couldn't really get pics of where the road was flooded, since they are barricaded off a fair distance from where the flood waters submerged the road. What you see in some of those pics are various pathways and such that are submerged. I know the pic you are referring to, and it's actually an illusion -- it's really a pathway that is submerged -- not the actual road there (but if the waters rise a few more feet, consider that bridge in trouble).

Getting to the southern area of the city is virtually impossible right now due to the road closures.

I'm lucky in that I live in the northeast part of town (which happens to be the highest part of the city). We're pretty much safe from potential flooding.

This is spring run-off and early summer storms, right?

Most of this came from the storms we had over the past two weeks (nearly dropping 200mm of rain during both weeks) -- the spring run-off is just starting, so that could complicate things even more over the next few days.
