Prank Against Tom Cruise Leads to Arrest

2 hours, 33 minutes ago

LONDON - The London premiere of "War of the Worlds" turned into a war of words after
Tom Cruise was squirted in the face by a man posing as a reporter.

Four men were released on bail after being arrested and were ordered to return to a police station Monday.

The actor was outside a movie theater in central London's Leicester Square on Sunday doing press interviews when a man squirted him with a water pistol disguised as a microphone, London's Metropolitan Police said.

Cruise initially appeared to laugh at the incident but then asked the prankster: "Why would you do that?"

As the man gave a barely audible excuse, Cruise said: "Do you like thinking less of people, is that it?" The prankster tried to walk away but Cruise reached across the metal barrier, held his arm and said: "Don't run away. That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that ... it's incredibly rude."

The actor grew increasingly irritated and told the man: "You're a jerk." Footage of the incident appeared on Sky News TV on Monday.

Police detained the man who squirted Cruise and arrested three other men who filmed the incident. The four were working on a new comedy show for British television station Channel 4 in which celebrities are the targets of practical jokes.

Police released the men on bail several hours later and ordered them to return to a central London police station on Monday, when they may be charged with assault, the police spokesman said.

Actress Katie Holmes, who recently got engaged to Cruise, was at the premiere but not by his side at the time of the incident.

As much as I don't like all the hoopla he's making, I did like this story of what he did. If it's a prank on celebs then I guess say so...like Candid Camera or Punk'd. Most of the celebs have a sense of humor right? Good thing on making sure he doesn't disappear in the crowd. I like to see him be more calm and with backbone instead of making himself look like an ass.

:stupid: The guy broke some laws with the intent of making him look bad. I don't think that celebrities should be treated any better than the average person but IMO they shouldn't be treated any worse either. Heck, in the few times that I put in some effort into my grooming if someone had squirted me with a water gun, I would've just kick his a$$ right there. All he did was call the guy a jerk and not let the guy run off before the cops got to him. I don't see what he did that was out of line.

Yeah, the problem is, he was all decked out for the movie premiere. Equate it with you & your senior prom. All dressed up, excited, (minus the million dollars) and some bully (again, equating to high school) comes up and squirts you. His reaction was calm compared to a) what some would have been and b) what MINE might have been. lol

I think Tom Cruise had every right to get upset. I give him credit for not slugging the guy, and he composed himself well. I can't say the same for Russell Crowe. :)

you know, i saw the footage too. and i was surprised to see that the way he reacted to the "reporter" was pretty much on par to how one of his characters would have reacted. i mean, if it didn't actually happen in real life, i would have just assumed it was from one of his movies.

with that said, i came to a couple conclusions... 1) cruise brings a lot of himself to his acting, whether it's a fighter pilot or assasin or a samurai or some pansy fighting mythical creatures... or 2) he doesn't know how to separate life from work.

either way, i'm still taller than him. :P

Well it's easy to keep your calm when you realize that at the end of the day you're going home to nail Katie Holmes. :)

To each his own, but I think he's regressing when it comes to the ladies...

Nicole Kidman -> Penelope Cruz -> Katie Holmes. I'm not counting Mimi Rogers because she's not in their class.

Yeah, I don't think that Katie Holmes is as good looking as Nicole Kidman but she is better looking than Penelope Cruz. Katie Holmes isn't "classically" beautiful but she has this "cute" look and she does this thing with her eyes where she moves them around like she has a cranial nerve palsy that I find adorable. Given the choice, I'll take "cute" over "hot" or "beautiful" every single time.

Nah, I have (...although nobody Nicole Kidman level) it's just that that look gets boring after a while. I mean I know they are attractive but it doesn't really get much of a reaction out of me above the waist. For some reason a "cute" girl can make me feel something for her... kinda weird... don't know if I'm making any sense or not...

I'm not going to argue with your choice of Katie over Penelope, but "cranial nerve palsy" is not something I think makes a girl attractive.

A hot chick, I can look at and be like, "Yeah, she's hot." But a cute chick, nice...

I'd still take Nicole Kidman over Katie Holmes though. For some reason, Katie Holmes seems dirty now that she's with Tom Cruise whereas Nicole Kidman seems classier for having endured that.

I know, you wouldn't think that random purposeless eye movements wouldn't be attractive but for some reason in some people it's just a complete turn on. Is there a fettish for that? Maybe I have a fettish. :)

Sounds like he handled it pretty well. I would have attempted to see how much damage I could inflict on the prankster before the cops got him, but I'm not as nice a guy as Tom Cruse. I respect him for keeping his cool.

Tom Cruise admits he's having a little problem with restraint these days.

The actor, currently on a promotional tour for War of the Worlds, may have toned down his couch-diving act (a la his Oprah appearance, but he still had plenty to say during a Friday appearance on NBC's Today show.

Cruise started off the interview in good spirits, flashing his trademark cheek-straining smile.

"It's just at a great time in my life. I'm really happy. And, you know, I'm engaged. I'm going to be married. I can't restrain myself," the actor enthused.

However, the friendly question-answer session between Cruise and host Matt Lauer quickly escalated into something of a confrontation, with Cruise revisiting the controversy he touched off weeks ago when he suggested that Brooke Shields' use of antidepressants to treat her postpartum depression was "dangerous."

"As far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you got to understand, I really care about Brooke Shields. I think, Here's a wonderful and talented woman. And I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science," Cruise said.

"The thing that I'm saying about Brooke is that there's misinformation, okay. And she doesn't understand the history of psychiatry. She doesn't understand in the same way that you don't understand it, Matt," the actor said.

Lauer and Shields may not get it, but according to Cruise, he, himself, is well-schooled on the topic, thanks, at least in part, to the teachings of the Church of Scientology.

"I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist, I never agreed with psychiatry," he informed Lauer. "Here's the problem. You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do,"

When asked if there were instances when drugs such as Paxil and Ritalin could be beneficial to the individual to whom they were prescribed, Cruise seemed visibly frustrated.

"Matt. Matt, Matt, you don't even--you're glib," Cruise said to Lauer.

"You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, okay? That's what I've done," the actor said.

"Because I don't talk about things that I don't understand."

Cruise also told Lauer, "Scientology is something that you don't understand."

During the interview, Cruise discussed other subjects, such as his latest film project ("I love making movies. And I feel privileged to be able to do that, always") and his passion for new fiancee Katie Holmes ("I can't even describe it").

On Thursday night, a much jollier Cruise appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, where between outbursts of riotous laughter, he referred to Holmes as "astounding," though he declined Letterman's offer to have an on-set judge perform marriage rites on the spot--perhaps because the bride-to-be was absent.

Cruise, who estimated to Letterman that he's known his fiancee for a grand total of "about 10 weeks," proposed to Holmes last week atop the Eiffel Tower. The couple first went ultrapublic with their romance in April, and Holmes has since claimed to be embracing her beau's religion of choice.

Cruise's earlier marriages to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman both ended in divorce. Holmes was previously engaged to Chris Klein but broke off the relationship in February.

Nah, not blepharospasm. I said I like it when their eyes move like they might have a cranial nerve palsy not a basal ganglia abnormality. Eyelid fluttering doesn't do anything for me except make me wonder if the girl has some dust in her eye. :eek3:
