I'm in DC, and swear by K&G Menswear. I don't think they have any in LA, though. I've done Men's Wearhouse too; good, knowledgable stuff but I think you pay for it. They're a bit on the high side.
Why the rush? Job interview?

Nordstrom Rack. Although any decent suit will need to be tailored a little, at least the pant length. That could take a week, which may be too long for you.
What do you mean by ASAP? It's pretty difficult to find a suit you like and then have it tailored to fit you properly. From my experiences, it usually took about 2 weeks for them to tailor the generic suits so that it fit me properly. Expect it to be longer if it doesn't fit the first time they alter things.
I have always liked the suits from Brooks Brothers, but since I'm short, I have found that the best suits are the ones that are custom-tailored from scratch.
Stores I would trust: Brooks Brothers, Nordstroms, Today's Man (if they even have those here in Cali). If you want the phone # for a custom-tailor joint shoot me a PM. I will warn you though, their product will take at least 3 weeks to make.

I've actually bought a few suits at marshalls that I've been very happy with. got one at macys that was just as nice. found them for 2-3 hundred with better quality materials that i would have gotten at a mens warehouse for similar price.
as for tailoring, as long as the jacket fits, and the pant waist fits....hemming the legs up takes no time. find a decent dry cleaners with an in house tailor, and most should be able to get the pant hemmed within a day, maybe 2.

If you are not going to wear it to often and want a good deal, Go to Men's Fashion Depot next to the Sports Arena. I worked there and I know they have a good value for what you get.
If you want a nicer suit and a slightly higher cost with good customer service then yes, Men's Warehouse would be my choice.
One suit? Make it dark grey, you can wear it just about anywhere.
If you need to have it tailored today call them first. Men's Warehouse and Nordstrom should be able to handle it.
Good luck shopping and post a pic when you have it on. :)

I got a really nice suit at Robinson's May. I just needed the pants tailored and that took a day. They have good sales and let you use coupons they advertise in the paper so the final price is like 40% the sticker.
