E! TV Pulls Plug on Howard Stern

NEW YORK -- E! Entertainment Television said Wednesday it will stop airing new episodes of "The Howard Stern Show." The last episode will be seen July 8.

The televised version of Stern's radio show has been a staple on E! since 1994, shown weeknights at 11 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. and then again in the middle of the night.

Stern won't immediately disappear. E! said it would be airing reruns of the show — more than 2,000 were filmed over the years — for the foreseeable future.

"As `The Howard Stern Show' evolves into a premium service, it is time for our late-night programming to evolve as well," said Ted Harbert, the network's president.

Stern's popular radio program will move to Sirius Satellite Radio in January. His manager, Don Buchwald, did not immediately return a call for comment on E! Entertainment's decision.

What else does E! really have as a "showcase" show?
I used to love Talk Soup but then John Henson left and now it sucks...then again, it was also good because of all the talk shows at the time (Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake, Jenny Jones, Maury etc).

I listen to Stern sometimes. There's days where I get sick of hearing all the "take off your top" commentary or all the porn/vomit audio he plays and I turn it off. Other days...his show is funny. The majority of the time though, it's either too disgusting or he whines the whole time. I don't think his move to Sirius is going to sell many satellite radios & subscriptions either. I like Sirius when I can listen to it at home for free over DishNetwork, but I'm not planning on buying a receiver & paying $12/mo for it anytime soon.

In fact, some people are turning against Siruis altogether and going with XM - including some automakers who are looking into installing either receivers as an option - because of Sirius's endorsement on Stern. This move may be a backfire for the company who's already struggling to gain market share.

You Serious? :heh:

But seriously... (heh... I love the play on words) they should make recievers like televisions where you can choose which "broadcast" you want to receive and not be limited.)

Probably the one downside of satellite transmission... (just like in Sat TV) they want to lock you in to their product.

HOWARD STERN TV SHOW MOVES TO VIDEO ON DEMAND
Shock Jock Signs Three-Year Deal With iN Demand Networks

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Howard Stern fans will soon be able to tune in the shock jock’s TV show whenever they want, following an agreement struck today with video-on-demand distributor iN Demand Networks.

Financial terms of the three-year deal weren’t disclosed but it includes exclusive TV rights to The Howard Stern Show -— meaning the only place viewers can find Mr. Stern’s new TV broadcasts are on video on demand. The VOD network has distribution agreements with Time Warner, Comcast and Cox, but it didn’t rule out further expansion.

No ad opportunities
There are no planned advertising opportunities within Mr. Sterns VOD show, but Time Warner, Comcast and Cox subscribers will be able to access the content for a monthly fee.

Mr. Stern will have his own dedicated VOD channel on each those cable systems. Viewers will be able to access the most recent show 24 to 36 hours after its broadcast on the radio -- it will be on VOD the evening of the next day -- as well as archives of previous shows.

Because VOD programming doesn’t have to fit into a structured broadcast schedule, episode lengths will vary. Mr. Stern’s VOD programs will range from 60 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on how much of his four-hour show iN Demand decides to edit on any given day. “The show could be 46 minutes or it could be 58 minutes,” said Eric Duncan, a spokesman for iN Demand.

Until last month, TV highlights of Mr. Stern’s weekday radio show were part of the late-night lineup on the E! Entertainment basic cable network.

Less need to censor content
Making the show available as a subscription-based VOD program will reduce the need to censor Mr. Stern’s racy content -- a task E!’s programmers faced almost nightly. Additionally, Mr. Stern’s show is likely to become even bawdier as he ends his contract with Viacom’s Infinity Broadcasting in January and heads to Sirius Satellite Radio -- a move the VOD programming will document.

Bringing exclusive content such as Mr. Stern’s show to video on demand has been a major gambit for cable operators, which see VOD as a way to differentiate themselves from their chief competition, satellite companies such as DirecTV and Echostar’s Dish Network.
