Comments/Opinions on the best laptop's that weigh in at LESS THAN 5lbs?
I'm not looking for any type of gaming system by any means, I know with a low weight requirement I'll never get a powerful system (that's why I built my new desktop).
Just needs to be good and light, preferably with a 12.1" or bigger screen.
(likely only going to use for browsing and taking to/from classes)
Comments/Recommendations gladly accepted :)

I've been leaning towards an IBM system since the laptop is for my g/f.. and she can get a discount on it, not to mention they are very reliable, and overall good systems. I only wish I could find an IBM laptop that ran an AMD chip, or for that matter a PPC chip.
Anything/Anyone else?

Thinkpad, definately. Get a X40 or X41.
Other light and good laptops include the powerbook/ibook, the dell ultra light one (forget the model), and maybe a few others. But your decision should stop right at the X40/41 if you need a PC. The powerbook is a sweet machine though.

Thinkpad. But I'd recommend the T series over the X. It's not much heavier (starts at 4.5 lbs), but is a more powerful & nicer (IMHO) machine. Go for a T42 w/14.1" screen - they're rolling out the T43s, so you should see some discounts on the 42s. Here's one to look at: http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=699585
What's your budget?

I second both the X and the T. Otherwise the Dell Latitude X1 is a great machine too.

I like very light laptops and I don't think my x40 is underpowered. I got the IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 738 Low Voltage 1.40GHz with 1GB of ram and its pretty fast. My only two regrets is not getting a larger hard drive (though impossible since the 2.5 inch HDs can't go very high) and not getting an X41 with the fingerprint reader.

Well, the only reason I say underpowered is that you pay extra for the convenience of the tiny size - so for the same cost as the X with a 1.4, you can get a T series with a 1.8Ghz, but it'll weigh a pound or 2 more. Guess it all depends on what your priorities are.

yeah very true...with portability you pay for it in many ways, price, performance, and features. Btw the X series doesn't have built in optical drive.

I noticed that, which is part of the reason I'm hesitant to look too much further into the X series. I guess they're nice for writing....

It keeps the weight down which is very nice for a work laptop or a school laptop, but definately not good if it's your main computer. You can, however, get an ultrabay that can hold an optical drive.
