hey everyone. i want to take my gf to catalina for our upcoming anniversary. i just wanted to know if anyone has been there and can suggest something to do there and a place to eat. my gf really cant swim too well, so i think snorkling is kinda out of the question, aside from that, i'm open to other stuff

Get a kayak or a paddle boat. Go for a hike to the botanical garden. I think there's a glass bottomed boat too. Eat a buffalo burger. I'm due to go to Catalina next week... when are you going. I'm assuming you're going to Avalon. It's suprisingly small. Steve's steakhouse is fine dining. Flips has sushi. There's also a movie theater (with like one screen)

dude, i've always wanted to take the helicopter ride there. i think it's like $80/person, which i figure isn't so bad. 45 minutes to the island and a short tour and a ride back too.
snorkeling shouldn't be too bad for people who can't swim well. my friends have gone and they can't swim well.
enjoy!

im going to be going early august. ill check out the botanical gardens and the food places sound good.
also, my gf has been addicted to video blackjack ever since we turned 21 and went to vegas, is the casino in avalon really a casino or is it just called that?

honestly, i think catalina is really really boring.
its too small, not much to do, and visibility in snorkeling is poor, compared to other places im been.
not alot of fish either.
with the same money, id rather suggest to go to santa barbara, stay at a nice beachside hotel, and lounge by the pool over looking the beach.

Catalina certainly has a personality of it's own. It jives with some people and not with others.
drink and sex on the beach.

I agree with Jane or hint around to find a special place that you know she will enjoy.

But then again... Ray does have a point. :naughty:

The glass bottom boat is really cool. I liked the boat ride there and back too.

I still recall my first trip to Catalina. I couldn't decide on the helicopter vs the high-speed boat. So, we did both. We went over to the island via helicopter and came back by boat...had a taste of both.
We also took a bus guided tour of the island. There's a lot of good history away from the port. A lot of the history dealing with Wrigley, who owned the island for a time.
If you don't take a guided tour, there are many places where you can rent a golf cart type car to take your own tours. That's what is available to rent, no regular cars like those from Hertz, Avis, etc.
