While I didn't think it was that bad it was clearly not worth full ticket prices. In the end it was really nothing more than a chase scene that lasted 2 hours. You just follow one random guy, whom you really don't like very much, as he runs away from the destruction and certain death for two hours. It gets dull after a while - a short while.

I'm boycotting just because of Tom. Although I did see Batman Begins which had Katie so I'm not doing the guilt by association thing. So was it that bad story wise or acting wise?
modena
07-05-2005, 08:07 AM
why are you boycotting it b/c of Cruise?
LegendKiller
07-05-2005, 08:08 AM
Because he is a complete moron who belongs to a cult that tries to undermine proven scientific results through brainwashing and ostracization of anybody who doesn't agree with that cult?
That enough?

Yup, just curious as to what people think about him now, since he went "wierd".

yah what he said. :) He's a great actor but I've watched him being interviewed and the stuff he said recently just offends me and he's almost mysognistic. I'm sure it's a fantastic movie and I'll rent it or wait until it comes to HBO. It's just words and it's not like he eats little newborns for breakfast but if taken to an extreme case, would you support a great actor if you found out in his spare time he in fact does eat babies for breakfast and puppies for dinner? Anyways, I don't consiously boycott movies based on actors private lives but I did for Tom just because this isn't a Robert Downey Jr thing where he gets high on his spare time and gets acting gigs.
Hmm...this is better explained or opinionated in the other Tom Cruise is crazy thread...sorry to hi-jack this thread. :neartears
So did anyone like it?

I guess I can watch a movie or listen to a song or look at a painting without fretting about the politics/religion of the artist. Just as I don't get upset over the religion of the guy who cleans the toilets in my office. Like Tom Cruise, the guy is simply providing a service.
Anyway, this movie sucked. It was one of the most depressing movies I've seen since Shindler's List. At least Shindler had an important historical message. This movie was just crap.

Scientologists don't do that until they reach the 11th thetan. Tom is only on level 9.

I'll agree, not good. Just got boring, and in the end, really had no point. It was like listening to Grandpa Simpson tell a story, but with better special effects.

Not to go back on a read the book rant, but the book wasn't all that exciting either.... it is really just the story of a guy who sees aliens and runs and hides as they destroy city after city. I think the story was more to be a view on war... So storyline aside, the only cool thing would be the special effect that would make this worth watching if anything at all.
I have heard though, that the Orsen Wells reading of this on the radio is classic.

I got suckered into the movie by a woman (i was in the boycot tom phase also) but it was better then i expected, still not a great movie and it did drag on and on but overall i dont feel like i wasted a few hours of my life. a good rental maybe. at least you dont' need to pay too much attention to get what is going on.

I thought It was very entertaining, attention-grabbing, visually stunning, and then they got to the ending. Crap.

Just plain riddled with plot holes. Example....EMP goes off and all electricity dies....except for the one fool using his camcorder to tape the aliens. Argh.

Even Rosie O'Donnell, his #1 fan has dissed what he has to say. She is firmly in favor of Brooke Shields. If Katie Holmes marries him, she's as nuts as he is.
What I find interesting is he wasn't Scientologist until he married Mimi Rodgers who was. He converted(?) after they got married. :)

Another one that just killed me. They are hiding in the basement from the giant machines when a tentacle-like probe goes looking for them. Tom uses an axe to chop off the probe. Then he goes running outside. When he does there is no machine! What happened to the rest of the thing he just chopped off. Just plain stupid.
ialsohaveadream
07-06-2005, 07:08 AM
Ummmm, yes there was a machine there. I don't really want to argue much over a terrible movie, but there was an alien out there, and Tom did see it.

I caught that one as well. Also, it seems that if a modern car got zapped by an EMP big enough to kill every other car in town, watches, etc., that simply replacing the solenoid wouldn't work. What about the ECU?

Oh, how about the fact that the aliens disintegrate the humans in the beginning, but harvest them later? What the hell? Why don't you just harvest them from the start?

An hour into Traffic my friends and I decided it was the worst movie we had ever seen. So we went to the box office ,complained and they gave us our money back. I thought we would get free movie vouchers but they gave us greenbacks.

i didn't think it was all that bad, not worth the ticket price, but worth the time i spent laughing at some of it with friends. like merlin said, plot holes everywhere. the cellar scene was too long, and the ending wasn't explained, it just happened

Well I finally saw this (but I didn't pay for it!) and I can agree with you all that without a doubt, this movie sucked. It is interesting that Tom Cruise so often plays shallow, souless characters - he seems to excel at them for some reason (life begets art I would imagine).
