Does anyone have a good suggestion for a good auto insurance company or ideas on what I can tell the representative to get a lower insurance quote (i.e. holder of a license > 3 years, no violations, etc)? I am getting quotes for a scion tc and results as follows for a six month policy:
- Progressive = $1100
- Esurance = $1500
- Allstate = 1,340
- Geico = $1,500
- Eagle = $750 (Can I really rely on this company????)
- CapitalOneSurance = $1,200
I cannot get auto insurance from State Farm or American Family as I signed independence from them. I cannot get insurance with my parents as they have State Farm. Are the quotes crazy??? :gle: I know it's mostly because I am < 25 and live in the city, but I have no traffic violations!! If any one can give any suggestions at all, I would be grateful!

Related to any parent or grandparent or even great or great great grandparent that has been in the military and had USAA as their carrier? heh If not, then I dunno. :(

USAA is the bomb. I pity those with normal car insurance.

If they ask you if you have a radar detector..make sure you say no.

Probably the fact that you live in the city, drive 2 door car, probably brand new and are under 25 has a lot to do with the fact its so expensive. Not having traffic violations means one thing, your premium isn't even higher.
Personally I'm a big fan of progressive. I'm currently with Mercury, which probably insure your area. Tried AAA?

:stupid:
Thanks to Mrs. Kevster we enjoy USAA for all our insurance needs. If you can get them they seriously rock.

I agree... but why do they ask. They also asked me about aftermarket equipment.

My grandfather was in the military and a USAA member but I don't think that I can become a member. Are you sure about this?

I am pretty damn sure that if your parent or grandparent had USAA coverage, you qualify for it. My granddaddy was in the army and had USAA for awhile so Scott & I got it right after we got married...

Did your parents have USAA? If, yes, then that is why you can get it b/c I do know that if your parent's are USAA members then you can become one. Just curious b/c I would love to qualify for USAA insurance. :)

Because if you have a radar detector and other aftermarket "speeder" type equipment, in their eyes, you're more likely to break traffic laws.

I'm currently under StateFarm, my rates aren't too horrible, but my agent or my agent's secretary (whoever I talked to) wasn't very heplful when I was trying to figure out why my good student discount was suddenly revoked.
I think I pay around 650 or 700 every six months, I have no convictions, and for some reason they classify my car as a "sporty luxory coupe" so it costs more to insure. Bah.

What kind of car do you have? When I was in college, they called my 2 door cavalier a 2 door sport coupe. There was nothing sporty about the cavalier.

Yeah, USAA is a good company to have. I got hit by a lady with USAA once and they made it next to impossible for me to get any money out of them. It was a truly miserable experience for me, but they definitely fight for their clients.

Try http://www.costco.com/Service/FeaturePage.aspx?ProductNo=10045004
If you're a CostCo member (and it may be worth the $40/year to join if the quote is low enough).
That's who I use.

Unfortunately with auto insurance...IT DEPENDS! (argh)
I have had State Farm for about 13 years, and they (agents/800#) have been good, mostly due their fast response.
...BUT...
When they should have sued a teenage driver for hitting my wife, they decided it would be less expensive to leave the accident on my wife's record (her only accident) as a "shared fault" even though the teen:
1. turned left
2. into the wrong lane
3. without signaling
4. hit and ran.
so, that cost us about a grand over three years in missed discounts.
Anyway, Farmers insures my house, and their rates (home and auto) are really good, but when I ask around, I get both ends of the spectrum, from great to terrible.
My advice: ask around at school/work/church to see what others like you like and have to pay. (Also, it's a great way to break the ice in conversations)

You can also check on the reliability/financial status of insurance companies here:
http://www.ambest.com/
You have to sign up, but its free. A++ is the best rating..
Also, Clark Howard has some good info on car insurance:
http://clarkhoward.com/library/tips/car_insurance.html
I'm also shopping for new car insurance. I'm with Allstate and they keep mis-classifying my Jeep GC as a commuter vehicle saying I drive it more than 7500 miles/year when I don't. It raises my premiums several hundred $$.
