my friend has a hp pavilion zv5000, when i unplug it from the adapter, and go on battery only the screen dims to save energy. Is there a way to turn that off?... please advise.

check the Bios... most of the time there is a setting in the bios under power saver to turn off that feature. same way with the speed steping of processing.

What about Power Saver in Control Panels? On my Dell it has different setting for plugged in, battery, etc.

well... i can't find it... its not under power settings... i went under display and under advanced... then under overlay it won't let me turn up the brightnes.. . any ideas?

Quite often there will be a software configuration utility that is preinstalled (Dell's is called 'Quickset" and such).
Of course, you should be able to turn up the brightness manually no matter what (usually a key you press with the Fn button).
