I am going to help a Karaoke DJ put together a system. I have discovered from another KJ that external firewire hard drives are a lot more reliable than USB2 drives. He speaks from experience having numerous crashes and lockups using USB as an interface.

He has been using an eMachines laptop for over a year and a half with virtually no problems. I would consider that brand but would like to know of other reliable brands.

Another possibility would be using a PCMCIA adapter, but I am not sure of their reliablity.

Is a iBook or Powerbook acceptable?

Those have the added bonus of being "cool" :)

My 3-year old Dell laptop has a firewire port on it. Most laptops out there have at least one.

I was quite disappointed to find that my brand new, top of the line CAD workstation - the Precision M70 laptop - does not have a firewire port. All of the previous models have them, so I don't know why they would have left it off of this one.

My Dell i700m has firewire port. I believe the i6000 and i9300 also have firewire ports. Most of the new HP/Compaq laptops also have them.
