Survey: Top 10 movie car chases

Survey: 'Bullitt' zooms to top list of greatest car chases on film; 'Fast and Furious' takes tenth.

July 13, 2005: 4:26 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Steve McQueen's car chase scene in the 1968 movie "Bullitt" still ranks as the most popular car chase scene in Hollywood history, according to a survey.

The detective movie, which featured McQueen driving a Ford Mustang in a high-speed chase through the streets of San Francisco, captured 40 percent of the votes in the survey. The email survey was conducted by Hagerty Insurance, a company that insures collectible cars, and had nearly 2,000 respondents.

"Bullitt" beat out its nearest rival, the 2000 remake of the movie"Gone in 60 Seconds," by almost a five to one margin.

The action comedies "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Blues Brothers" took the third and fourth spots.

Rounding out the list, the original 1974 version of "Gone in 60 Seconds" finished fifth, followed by "The French Connection", "Ronin", "Vanishing Point", the recent remake of "The Italian Job" and "The Fast and Furious" which claimed the tenth spot.

Those films that just missed the cut included the "The Bourne Supremacy," the Ducati motorcycle scene in "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Days of Thunder" featuring Tom Cruise.

Nice to see one of my fave movies of all time (Smokey and the Bandit) on there. :D

I can't believe this didn't make the list. Sure, it might have been more special effects than the other ones, but it was intense. I remember the first time seeing Reloaded in the theater, I was literally jaw-dropped and clutching my seat the whole time they were on the highway scene. Awesome stuff. :thumb:

Must read more carefully. :nono: :hehehmm:

Smokey & the Bandit and The Blues Brother were the first two that popped into my mind when I read the thread title. I agree that the Road Warrior also belongs on the list. And let's not forget the Cannonball Run.

Matrix Reloaded car/motocycle chase should have been in the top ten.

The car chase near the end of Blues Brothers was good, but I like when they were driving through the mall.

The USA channel just had Ronin on again so I recorded it and watched it last night.

While I marveled once again at the chase scenes, it amazed me to think what the film crew must have had to go through to set all those chase scenes up throughout Paris and Nice.

It must have taken forever, and cost a fortune.
