Independence Day for Transformers

By Joal Ryan Wed Jul 13, 8:35 PM ET

Optimus Prime has a prime release date: The Fourth of July.

Transformers, the long-planned, live-action movie based on the robot-morphing cartoon, comic and toy franchise, will roll into theaters July 4, 2007, DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures announced Wednesday.
Michael Bay (The Island, The Rock) will direct;
Steven Spielberg will executive produce.

Children of the 1980s likely will be champing at the tie-in lunchbox.

"The diehard fans will like it as long as it stays true to Transformers roots and doesn't stray too far from the ideals that we grew up with," Brendan Reilly, co-Webmaster of The Transformers Archive (www.tfarchive.com), said in an email interview about the movie announcement. "The casual or un-familar fan will need to see something awesome to win them over, although a 40-foot robot is usually pretty cool."

Cool-looking robots who convert themselves into battle tanks and other vehicles in order blow up things real good are at the mechanical heart of the Transformers, the classic tale of good automaton (the Autobots) versus evil automaton (the Decepticons) in a battle for control of Earth. Optimus Prime is the leader of the Autobots; Megatron, the dark lord of the Decepticons. Both Autobots and Decepticons hail from the planet Cybertron. All this backstory and more was revealed in Transformers, the syndicated cartoon series launched in 1984 with the help of toy-maker Hasbro, which simultaneously--and savvily--launched a still-thriving merchandise line.

No less savvy today, the makers of the new Transformers movie have already begun a full-scale offensive. The new official Website (www.transformers.com) went up Tuesday. Transformers: Cybertron, the latest animated series, launched this month on Cartoon Network. Burger King cooks up a monthlong action-figure promotion beginning in August. And this weekend in San Diego, on the occasion of Comic-Con International, the geek world's largest annual gawkfest, an 18-wheel truck touting the franchise's considerable wares will be beached in the convention hall.

In theory then, this thing ain't going to be Transformers: The Movie.

Transformers: The Movie was the little-loved 1986 animated feature that gave Optimus Prime, Megatron, et al., their first crack at the silver screen. Much as Fox is planning to right past cinematic wrongs with an all-new, A-list take on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, another 1980s cartoon/toy phenomenon that spawned a cheeseball 1980s film, the new Transformers crew is looking to take its property upscale.

In a message board Monday post on his personal Website (www.donmurphy.net), Don Murphy, a Transformers co-executive producer, said Spielberg, DreamWorks and Hasbro are committed to making a film that is no less than "GREAT" (the capital letters are all his).

"It will be GREAT," Murphy continued, "and then we will make sequel after sequel. There is no doubt that this is true."

With excellence promised, the powers that be now need only to lock in actors and writers--none were announced Wednesday--and start cameras rolling. Time, after all, is of the essence. In publicly staking claim to July 4, 2007, DreamWorks and Paramount become the first studios to reserve that holiday date for their own. Currently, the only other release on the 2007 calendar is Spider-Man 3, set for May 4 of that year.

Until Transformers debuts in theaters, and after Comic-Con wraps, its considerable fandom can busy itself with BotCon (www.transformersclub.com/conventions/frisco/), described by organizer Brian Savage as being "like a giant group hug for everyone who enjoys Transformers."

Scheduled for Sept. 22-25 in Frisco, Texas, the latest edition of BotCon--the event is more than 10 years old--is expected to draw as many as 5,000 devotees of the shape-changing robots. "The whole movie announcement just adds more fire and fuel," said Savage, director of Hasbro's official Transformers Collectors Club.

The way Savage sees it, the unlikely secret to the Transformers' success is: Personality. Anyone, he said, can make a transforming robot.

"But guess what? It's not Optimus Prime."

Man, I hope they don't screw this up. Not so sure about Michael Bay.

Plus, am I the only one who really liked Transformers: The Movie? I was amazed by the people that voiced for it. Orson Wells, Robert Stack, Lenard Nimoy, etc...

I'm so excited!! I actually really like Michael Bay. The Rock has to be one of the best movies ever. Only bad part is that we have to wait a year...

Ahh crap - Michael Bay?!? This guy loves filling his movies full of explosions and is usually thinks of that film element known as a 'plot' as an afterbirth. Does anyone remember that giant load of crap called 'Pearl Harbor'? How about 'Armageddon' which was seemingly one giant Aerosmith video? Goddamn it! Was Sam Raimi unavailable?

Oh come on it's not that bad to have Michael Bay direct this one. I wouldn't give the Pearl Harbor plot a big thumbs up but it did have some sick effects. Anyways, this is a transformers movie. If you go into it anticipating the plot development and what not, I think you're going to be disappointed regardless of who the director is.

Great special effects do not make a movie. You know a movie is going to majorly suck ass when they're hyping the 'Unbelievable special effects!' because there's nothing else better about it. Believe it or not, there actually is a story with the transformers. I seriously don't think this director will develop anything on that. Michael Bay is widely known for focusing on exposions rather than any kind of plot and that is why I am disappointed. If you want a good balance of special effects and plot, see Spiderman II. Sam Raimi did a fantastic job there, that's all I can say without going into a page-long summary.

For more references on Michael Bay and why he should be stopped, please listen/read the lyrics to the song, 'Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you' from the movie, "Team America: World Police".

Oooooh, my brother will go nuts if he hasn't heard it.

(He's a BIG transformers fan, and is slowly converting me over). I did enjoy the original movie as well though. :)

....but let's not talk about the monstrosity that is Transformers: Cybertron. Considering there's important information in the first few episodes of Galaxy Force, it's just unbelieveable to see that they are skipping it in the English release so far. Episode 1 of Cybertron corresponds to episode 4 of Galaxy Force.

(For those not aware, Galaxy Force is the Japanese version that Cybertron is based from.

The funny thing is that when I think of Michael Bay, I think of The Rock, Bad Boys, Armageddon, and Pearl Harbor. I think he may of done one or two others...but I don't think much more plot really could have been fit into any of those movies. I loved the first three for the action scenes and thought that the plot fit in as it should in that type of movie. I actually thought that the first half of Pearl Harbor focused too much on the plot and didn't get into the action movie I was expecting to see soon enough. I guess certain movies I go to to be moved, and others I go to to be entertained. Most of Michael Bay's fit into the latter category.

I haven't seen the South Park movie, but I'm kind of interested to now. I can't find a lyrics site that isn't blocked from work so I'll have to wait until later to read them :).

Anyways, I have a lot of respect for you Kevster. I'm only arguing with you because I know you don't take it personally ;)

michael bay!! :puke: :puke:
(no offense, M-n-I :) )
but yeah, i pretty much wholeheartedly agree with everything kevster said. speaking of Team America, every time i heard the theme song ("america!! f*** yeah!!"), i couldn't help but think to myself "that song is SOOO michael bay/jerry bruckheimer."

Micheal Rodriguez should direct this, damnit.

perhaps you mean Robert Rodriguez, director of Sin City and the Mariachi trilogy (not to mention the spy kids movies, WHEEE). not to be a constant naysayer, but yeah, i can't stand his movies either.

i know i shouldn't criticize without offering an alternative, but i can't think of one off the top of my head. if i do, i'll mention it and see what you all think.

and as for the original transformers movie, i loved it too, but maybe that's just nostalgia talking.

EDIT:
one thing i will say, tho, is that, with dreamworks and spielberg backing the project, it may just be enough to cancel out the michael bay gag-factor.

Nah. Think something more along the lines of "SkyCaptain and the World of Tomorrow" lameness. Everything was filmed in front of a green screen in that "movie". The way this is going, Michael Bay will probably try to get Ben Assfleck to sign onto it as well. :2far:

According to this site http://thegeekzine.com/?p=599 you can write a line of dialogue for "Optimus Prime"

Beginning within the next few weeks you can submit a line of dialogue that you’d like to hear Optimus Prime utter during the movie. The contest is dubbed “Write a line for Optimus Prime.”

The designers said that an International wouldn't have made as big of a robot as the Peterbilt. They did CG tests based on the "parts available" on both vehicles. The Peterbilt version allows him to be 40-50ft tall.

What! Where is my true bubblebee. I liked him cause he looked like a beetle more than a bug.. In face i think thats where they got the idea.

And where are the constructicons... or the tape player guy who had the three mini bots as his tapes... That guy rocked..

Sigh, and why do they look like alien hedas with massive amounts of metal pieces randomly glued to their head. I really appreciate the sleek elegance they had in both forms. This seems very craggy and unfriendly. i guess its not for kids anymore...

but i guess as long as there is energon cubes we are good.

Unfortunately Soundwave wasn't chosen as one of the robots for this movie. Bay and his team decided to assimilate the original generation robots with some of the newer generation robots.

For this first movie, there will be more decepticons than autobots. Part of the storyline is the Autobots fight alongside the military.

It has been discussed, though not confirmed, that they have begun discussing the robots who will be introduced in future movies.

Brawl - He's a badguy?! He was a G1 Autobot that got killed in the movie by Starscream shooting him with Megatron. Grrrr....

Barricade (’a Police Car‘) - If they are going to have a police car...they should have had prowl out there.

Scorpinoc (‘very similar to a Dinobot/Beastwars character’) - Scorpinoc was one of the older Decepts. He was eventually made into a headmaster.

Frenzy - They are going to have Frenzy and no Shockwave? Frenzy is a tape!

This is unfortunately what we get with the master of teh suck, Michael Bay. He clearly must be stopped.

Personally I think Peter Jackson would have done this franchise the justice it deserves.

Producers have said that the trailer has nothing to do with the movie storyline. Why did they release it then? No idea.
