Okla. Woman Accused of Giving Birth Drunk

Thu Jul 14,10:29 PM ET

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - A woman has been arrested on child neglect charges after giving birth while drunk, police said. Melissa Irene Tanner, 37, is accused of having a blood alcohol content close to three times the legal limit when she gave birth to a baby girl on June 30.

She is being held in jail with bail set at $30,000 and the baby has been placed in foster care.

The baby was not breathing upon birth and had to be administered a medication to counteract any narcotics that may have been present in the child's system. After an emergency procedure by hospital staff, the child started breathing.

Tanner reportedly has six other children. According to a July 11 probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Tanner told police she and another person had consumed a case of beer.

I can see if she needed a shot to reduce the pain but they have epidurels for that. If she drank as part of her daily routine then send her to jail and some rehab.

Look we all know that you shouldn't drink during pregnancy but this seems like it is going way too far. Wat are they going to do next? Arrest pregnant smokers for child abuse? Seems over the top to me.

I think they have done this before. Or maybe it was an episode of Law And Order.

Well, there's doing something that's a bad idea (like smoking, or having a drink or 2 while pregnant). Then there's doing something that's endangering the life of the baby - such as taking drugs or drinking so much that the baby stops breathing. She clearly crossed the line, so yeah, she should be arrested.

Let's not call it a baby as it wasn't even born yet. Wow, do child abuse laws apply to fetuses?

3x the legal limit is pretty extreme. That is well beyond "a few drinks". It almost killed her baby. That kind of behavior can perminantly impare a child.

Do you guys have any idea what Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) can do to a kid?

http://www.well.com/user/woa/fsfas.htm

B!tch should be locked up, her kids taken away, and sterilzed so she can't do this again.

Yes, they do, especially that close to term.

I can understand if it was early in the pregnancy & maybe she would argue that she didn't know she was preggo - that would be more of a grey area. However, once you're into the 3rd trimester there's an expectation that you're going to deliver the baby, and you can be held responsible for any harm you cause to it.

She deserves whatever the government throws at her.

The baby couldn't breath when she came out so it seems like the charge fits the crime.

This woman has six other kids, let me say that again six other kids and split a case of beer. WTF I don't know this womans story but I'm sure she is not well off to support these six kids. It's just MHO because she doesn't have the sence not to drink while pregnant with here SEVENTH child. If they don't put her in jail atleast tie her tubes.

There really should have been a disclaimer in your post. That beast is hideous to the point where it could manke you sick (especially in light of the situation she created for that little baby).

According to this link, she was from Dewey. Course Dewey doesn't have a hospital, so she was probably in the bartlesville hospital.
