2 hours, 6 minutes ago

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii - A tourist from Connecticut reported he was mugged twice within five minutes while walking Alii Drive, Big Island police said.

Derrick Schull, 50, was walking south on the oceanside-street at 3:25 a.m. Wednesday when a dark-colored sport utility vehicle pulled alongside him. Three men in their 30s got out, forced Schull to give up his wallet and drove away, police said.

Five minutes later, Schull reported that four males, including two juveniles, emerged from some bushes and demanded his wallet. When he told them he had no wallet, two of them started punching and kicking him, police said.

Schull suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention.

There are several parts of Hawaii where you don't want to be white at 3.25am.

walking at 3:25am by yourself, you're just asking for it. he's lucky he wasn't mugged first and then shot by the 2nd group of muggers.

:hmm: I used to live off of Alii drive. The street runs up and down the west coast of Hawaii (Big Island) and wasn't well lit. I wouldn't even walk it at 3AM. It was a small town and I bet the cops already know who the people in the jeep are.

I wonder why he was walking it at 3AM. There was an area, near town, where the tranvestites worked. Some of the good Christian locals may have just been trying to discourage that sort of behavior. ;)

Dayuuum... hard times for criminals when they try to rob someone and find that another criminal has already gotten to the wallet first. :2far:

But yeah... don't go walkin' ANYWHERE at 3:00 a.m. You just askin' for trouble.

I shall have to ask my roommate about this place. He is from the big island and insists on calling us white folk "howlies", so I retaliate by saying that if all the Hawaians are your size, I wouldn't really worry, but I guess there's some of them big scary guys that we see stereotyped playing the little mini-guitar dude, ukeke lele I think it is.

My only experience on the Big Island is in Waikaloa and Kona, never been out past 2am, in 8 years of going there, what activities kept this man out til 2am? I know drinking could have been one, but when i go to hawaii, i go climbing and diving, and like to get to sleep ASAP, so I don't have time to stay awake that long.

Yeah, but most of those big guys are generally Samoans.
