notebook harddrive?

i was just wondering which harddrive out there would be good for a notebook.

i have only found hitachi travelstar the only company that makes a 7200RPM hd for notebooks. if i'm wrong please correct me.

i think seagate is coming out with some 7200rpm hds. i think their expected release was june, but i guess theres some hold up. ive been waiting to get a quicker hd for my laptop. beware of the hitachi ones. ive heard good and bad things about them. i had a friend who lost everything on his laptop cuz his hd decided to crap out

I've always had good luck with Hitachi drives - you really can't go wrong with those. However, keep in mind that portable drives have a higher failure rate than desktop drives: smaller size, more moving around & more heat = higher chance of failure.

I don't mean to be an ass, but your friend lost everything because he didn't have a backup, not because his drive failed! ;)

It's even more important to back up laptops because not only is there a higher chance of drive failure, but you're much more likely to have your laptop stolen, dropped down the stairs or backed over by a car than your desktop machine.

I tried to buy the hitachi one but everyone was on back order. I placed an order in March then Dell kept saying 2 weeks until they finally just cancelled it in early june.

I havent looked again since though.

i was planning to switch to a 7200rpm cause the 5400rpm is just killing me. programs won't load as fast as the 7200. but i guess i'll wait for seagate to see what they have to offer on their drives. i know seagates pretty good on desktops so i'm hoping they will just be as good for notebooks.

I know - I sometimes have a hard time finding these. Whenever I need one, I check Newegg, Dell.com and Buy.com - usually one of those 3 will have one in stock.

Anytime I need a notebook HD, I am buying Seagate. I have been very pleased with them so far. Five year warranty, too.

its all good. i back up all my stuff so im good. im sure he learned better to back up his stuff, especially since he lost one of his projects that was due that week
