I'm flying into the Bay area early next week for a friend's wedding (wedding is Thursday). Having never been to California before, I was wondering if anyone here can offer any advice/ideas for things to do while I'm there. I'll really only have one day (Friday 7/22) completely free to do whatever I want, as I'm flying back early Saturday morning. I plan to rent a car and see as much as I can of what I've always been told is a beautiful part of the country. Any G|Apexers out there want to grab an adult beverage?

hm, i gotta entertain a friend that's coming in two weeks. heheh.

let's see... in the city:
fisherman's wharf
palace of fine arts (the exploratorium is here and it's a pretty cool science museum)
chinatown
haight/ashbury
the palace of legion of honor (in golden gate park i believe. art museum with like a huge rodin sculpture collection)
steinhart aquarium (also in golden gate park)
shopping all around
castro district (the gay mecca, if that's your thang)
tenderloin district (xxx district, if that's your thang)

that's stuff i can think off the top of my head.

with a car, i recommend:
the monterey bay aquarium (about a 2 hour drive south)
wine tasting in napa valley (about a 2 hour? drive northeast)

i hate driving in SF. just to let you know. i might be able to meet up. actually, i don't see why i wouldn't be able to. :)

you can go watch a giants game, even if you dont like the giants, the ballpark is nice. you can always go watch for free, at the fence in right field. kimchi suggested most of others, most of the places in golden gate park is closed for remodeling, i believe steinhart is temp relocated downtown. theres northbeach as well, at night, for the bars and other stuff.

Thanks for the tips everyone! Great suggestions, though Merlin's isn't exactly my thing. I'm really going to have only one free day, Friday. So I'll probably just drive around SF for some sightseeing. Kimchi, I'll PM you.

Visit the fortune cookie factory in Chinatown. Best cookies I've ever had!
