NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - It's starting to look like the muscle car wars of the late 1960s are coming back for real. Following this year's introduction of the Dodge Charger, the next muscle car name to be resurrected will be the Dodge Challenger, according to a report in the industry weekly Automotive News.

The Challenger will be based on the same platform as the Charger, which shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Magnum wagon, according to the report. The newspaper cites industry sources including outside analysts familiar with the development program.

No-one with Chrysler Group, the division of DaimlerChrysler responsible for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles. would talk about the program, Automotive News said.

Unlike the Charger, the Challenger will be a two-door car, according to the report. That would put it in direct competition with the recently redesigned Ford Mustang and the Pontiac GTO. The current Charger has four doors.

Like the Charger, 300 and Magnum, the Challenger will be available with an optional V8 "Hemi" engine, Automotive News said.

When it was originally introduced for the 1970 model year, the Challenger was a small "Pony Car" competitor to the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

The car is scheduled to be introduced in 2009, Automotive News said. The report said the company expects to sell 60,000 to 70,000 Challengers a year.

I have always loved the lines of the 1970 Challenger. IMO. it was the prettiest muscle car of that era, followed by the 1970 Chevelle, the 1969 Camaro and the 1965 GTO. Somewhere in between fits the 1969 Boss Mustang, the 1970 Hemi-Cuda and the 1965-1966 Shelby Mustang.

I just hope they don't crap it up like they did with the GTO and the proposed Camaro.

Very nice list, but 69 Camaro > all imo.

I saw the Charger on the way to a club last weekend and it looked better than the new mustang imo. They should have made the charger in 2 door and did a lmtd ed general lee to coincide with the movie. :P

In high school there were some *ahem* narrow minded *ahem* yet creative individuals whos father happened to own a garage. They made an exact copy of the General Lee....bright orange paint, Old Dixie painted on her, the horn, and yes the doors were made so you could only get in from the window.

Lets just say that there were some people at the school who were more than a bit offended by the fact the car had Old Dixie on it.

These were also the guys who had the jacked up blazer that would park on top of the 10ft snow drifts (from clearing the lots) and who had the lift kit fall down while they were driving one day.
