Mom With Headache Lets Son Drive to School

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) -- A 13-year-old boy drove to school because mom had a headache. A school security supervisor caught the boy behind the wheel when he pulled up Tuesday morning in the staff parking lot at Ruth Harris Middle School, police Sgt. William Megenney said.

The mother and son live in San Bernardino, about 14 miles away from the school.

When the school officer called his home, his mother Ricela Perez, 35, said, "I had a headache and didn't want to drive to school, so I let him drive."

The mother and son each received misdemeanor traffic tickets: Perez for loaning her vehicle to an unlicensed driver and the teenager for driving without a license.

"The officer was extremely nice in this case because he actually could have arrested the mother for child endangerment," Megenney said.

I was steering by the age of 10 and driving by 12. (not here in NYC but upstate) And even at 13 I was a better driver then most kids in my drivers ed class when i was 16.

there isn't a kid on a farm anywhere in america that can't drive by 13. It's actually legal in some areas for them to drive as long as it's on the farm.

Yeah but it isn't legal in San Bernadino. There is a big difference between driving in a farm and driving out in public. The fact is that what the mother did was stupid and reckless and in the very least it teaches the kid to ignore laws when they are inconvenient. She did endanger the child and IMO should be punished for such.
