is there a website that you guys know about that gives you basic information on SQL servers? i work for a small company and my boss wants me to find out information about SQL servers. i know how to build and manage pc's but have no real education for servers. if you guys could direct me to a website where i can learn the "basics" i guess that would be helpful. plus how much do basic SQL servers go for? thanks in advance.

Are you looking to host this in house or are you looking for someone else to host it? You can operate SQL Server on a machine running XP Pro if you want.

It really depends on your application, e.g. what are you using the db for. If you are not dealing with a high volume of traffic on the DB, both will perform about the same.
If you are going to have the db hosted by a hosting company, its really a matter of principle. When we started bulding our order management system, we had a db hosted by a company and went w/ MySQL b/c I didn't want to be bound in to MS.
MySQL has the nice advantage of running on many different platforms. In other words, if you go w/ MySQL and your want to migrate from MS servers to *nix servers someday, you can do that. If you go w/ SQL Server, you are stuck w/ MS until you rewrite your app.
