hey, has anyone here ever owned a chinchilla?

i'm thinking about getting one. they're so cute. not sure where to buy them either. just want to get some info first. thanks. :)

Never looked into owning a chinchilla. I once considered owning a skunk, but I found out that Illinois doesn't permit it, so I ended up with ferrets which are legal in Illinois (but not in California or New York City, as far as I recall). Be sure to check on your local laws before investing in any "exotic" pet.

one of mike's roommates has a teddy bear made out of chinchilla fur... it's the softest things i've ever felt... but yeah, i'd prefer a live chinchilla :) let us know if you get one, post pics if you do!

Well go to Petsmart.com they will have a caresheet you can look at. Also if you are not trusting of Pet store chincillas look up local breeders. I am sure there are Association for Chinchillas. Also find a good book and read up on them. Chinchillas are cute but are a bit different than other rodents. For example, if you pick it up wrong they will drop their coat (quick fur or something) to get away... you will have a bald chinchilla ;)

Yeah so read a book, spend sometime with a Chinchilla at a PetsMart, and check out PetsMart's online caresheet for basic info... oh and look for a local breeder if you want.

i was once told that it was ilegal to have a chinchilla in Cali, but i have a friend who does have a pet chinchilla anyway.
you have to give them dust baths and stuff.

it wouldn't be for me, but for my friend. she really wants one and i'm just helping her do some research about it.

she lives in PA, but will probably move to NYC for work.

Get it from a breeder, not a petstore.

The purple ones are the most expensive.

They need big cages. Taller the better.
