I wonder why they are not going to DC in their 50 STATES in 50 Days campaign
Washington (AP) - Now Jesse Jackson is involved in trying to convince ESPN that its 50-state tour of sporting events should include a stop in the nation's capital.
The activist and former presidential candidate says it's insulting that the cable network left D.C. out when it came up with its plans. Jackson says he'll go to the network's Connecticut headquarters if they don't change their tune.
He also might picket the ESPN Zone bar in the city that's home to the Nationals, Wizards, Mystics, United and Capitals (website - news) . Plus there's the Redskins (website - news) , if you want to figure Landover into the mix.
The network says it'll mention D.C. when broadcasting from Virginia and Maryland.

It said 50 states. It didn't say "Around America".

Maybe if this is the biggest thing for Rev. Jackson to be raising awareness of, things aren't so bad.
I guess fighting for the rights of children, the poor, those in need of assistance doesn't bring as much attention as this self-aggrandizing publicity-whoring effort.
Another reason this guy should never be compared to Rev. King.

Now that Terri Schavio is gone, Jessie Jackson needs a cause to fill his time. This too shall pass!

And who honestly would do that?

Between Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reily... I don't know who is worse.

In order from the worst to the errr... less worst:
Al Sharpton
Bill O'Reily
Rush Limbaugh
Jessie Jackson
You have my permision to print that out and keep it in your wallet, just in case someone springs that question on you out in town where you are away from your computer and can't access the thread for refference. ;) :P

Ya, i would agree Rush and Bill are wacko's themselves. But seriously, are you really a Sharpton/Jackson supporter? I find it hilarious that WHEREVER there's some ill-precieved injustice, that these two need to jump in front of a camera to get face time.

Not quite sure what that means but Jesse himself has posited himself a protege of MLK and a champion of civil rights but has been little more than a profiteer off the backs of others. On the other hand, Dr. King was one of the most important people of the 20th century.

I don't see them as causing more damage than the other two I mentioned...
I guess it just depends on who or what the person is fighting for.
Of course, I don't expect ANY of you to take my side on this one... that's just the way that most of this forum is slanted (and I accept that...)

Not too many people are willing to lay down their lives for what they believe in like Dr. King...
Jesse has his own issues... but honestly, from my perspective, his motives and agendas have a solid base against many issues that are of concern from my perspective and others of my race's perspective (even if the current issue of this ESPN thing isn't one of them.)
Honestly, I sometimes think that some (mostly White) people are just scared of Al and Jesse. Would you rather have Farrakhan raising his voice instead? Most likely... you just want us to "shut up and just deal with it". :hmm:

I think Al and Jesse could do a lot more good if they were a little more discriminating on the battles they choose. The ESPN story just reinforces that opinion. And honestly, I respect Farrakhan a heck of a lot more than I do Al and Jesse. While I think Farrakhan's views are way out of left field, i respect his passion for what he truely believes in. I don't feel like Al or Jesse have any one passion other than wanting to remembered as some great civil rights leaders..and i somehow doubt the history books will note them as such.

What does that have to do with the article and/or thread?

What does that have to do with the article and/or thread?
Nothing... but a counter comparison of folks on the opposite side that draw alot of attention to themselves in the name of "morality and what is supposed to be right".
So why didn't you ask... what does "Al Sharpton" have to do with this article and/or thread?
And that's my point... people can read into it whatever they choose to read into it.

Understood...though I don't think the individuals you named draw as much attention to themselves as Jackson and, to a lesser extent, Sharpton do.
So why didn't you ask... what does "Al Sharpton" have to do with this article and/or thread?
I should have, agreed. Though I do feel that there is more of a direct correlation between Jackson-Sharpton than Jackson-Limbaugh-O'Reilly.
And that's my point... people can read into it whatever they choose to read into it.
It just seemed like a bit of a diversion being used. Personally, I think all four individuals probably do more harm than good to their "cause".

dude...everytime a black person gets cracked on here you jump in and say something to the effect of...i disagree but  there's no use discussing it since you won't get it. do you have a reason for supporting OJ, sharpton, jackson, etc., other than the fact we're not african-american and shouldn't be allowed to point out some fairly obvious faults? :2far:
slanted? what are you saying? we're racist? i'd rather be told i'm wrong because of XXXX than i wouldn't understand because i'm racist or not black. :censored:

and you do the same thing when someone slams a republican/conservative, i sometimes do when someone slams a liberal, we all defend people. as far as i know, DF is the only african-american who posts in OT/pol. for as long as i've been posting/lurking here, DF has never stated that anyone of us is racist, other than the occasional troll.
and i do believe that you and i(and the majority of others) don't understand the mentality of the african-american people. as a culture and a people they are still being discriminated against, and that has a HUGE affect upon the way a person thinks. we don't go through that, and because we don't we can't understand it.

Pot and kettle...
I already explained my POV on the subject... go re-read my previous post (2nd up from this one).
I don't expect you to agree with my logic... as this is contrary to your POV. And honestly, I don't stand up for every Black person who does something... if they honestly did wrong.. they did wrong. However in the court of popular opinion many things that you might think are wrong are not wrong to someone else.... hence we discuss.
Now stop waving your finger at me.... :nono:

not sure i understand how i am being disingenuous. i don't jump to the aid of people on the right regardless of the behavior being discussed.
even if that was the case, that's IMHO not nearly as bad as merely defending or attacking someone solely based on the amount of pigment in their skin. at least you are doing it based on a theoretical shared ideology.
and DF...i have no problem w/you defending someone if you have reason to do so. but it sometimes appears that you think we hate OJ, sharpton, or jackson because they are black. not the case at all. how can you support someone like jackson who is essentially an attention whore. if i were to list the top 5 things that i believe are biggest threats to the black community they would be as follows: higher poverty levels than other races, much higher HIV infection rates, education, of course racism still exists, and absentee fathers. this may not in fact be the actual top five probs but from my perspective they are in there somewhere. why doesn't jackson focus on that stuff instead of terri schivo (sp?), benton harbor, DC and ESPN, etc. those may garner attention but is it really going to make a difference in the lives of anyone?
MLK seemed inspired to protest in spite of what may happen to him. Jackson and Sharpton seem to protest because of what they might get out of it.

Honestly, it wouldn't matter which issue Jesse chooses to attack... cause as soon as his name is spoken (or Al for that matter) a long line of folks will gather to oppose whatever it is.
Now I am not saying that I agree with EVERY issue he raises, however he does address some issues that are of concern to people like myself. And since he does have the media's attention then it is more likely that he will be heard versus anyone else.
I still firmly believe that this society really wants us to "shut the hell up and just deal with injustices". And folks like Jessie and Al just ain't gonna do that... hence they became political enemy #1 to some folks.
Either way... as I've stated before, I don't expect many of you to agree with them... as he doesn't play up to your visions of what are the " real issues" or what is really the right thing to do.
Sometimes, I just wish that folks could just speak to the man directly so that you can get a first hand account of where he is coming from. I'm sure that he would show you alot more respect than those other yo-yos I mentioned in an earlier post.
