Woman Blames Newspaper Typo For Theft
Ad In Lawrence, Kan., Paper Had Wrong Address

UPDATED: 12:39 pm PDT August 2, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- A Kansas woman who had her possessions stolen blames the city's newspaper.

Kris Bryan said the Lawrence Journal-World printed a mistake in a street address, causing her apartment to be cleaned out by thieves, reported KMBC-TV in Kansas City, Mo.

Bryan said she returned home after work one day and saw strangers loading up her belongings into their vehicle. When she asked what they were doing, they showed her a classified ad in the newspaper. The public notice stated that all things at 1319 Tennessee St., Apt. 3, would be thrown away if unclaimed.

"It was just a real shock," Bryan said. "I was freaking out. I told them that's my apartment -- there's been some mistake."

It was a one-digit mistake -- the newspaper ad should have read 1339 Tennessee St., the television station reported. The ad was placed because a woman in that home passed away and no one had claimed her belongings.

Bryan said the people she confronted returned her things, but her TV, DVD player, movies, furniture and a 7-week-old kitten had already been taken from her apartment.

"I was crying, bawling," Bryan said.

She said she wants the newspaper to pay $3,500 for the stolen items, but that can't replace her lost kitten.

"Sometimes you can't get away with your mistake, especially when someone gets hurt because of them," Bryan said.

Was it the newspaper or the guy that submitted the ad that was at fault? Also, how'd they get into the house? Break in?

I have this feeling people in that area don't lock their doors? I watched the news video and I would have to guess it's the case.

Poor woman, I feel for her. Once a newspaper misprinted a phone # for an apartment for rent and it ended up being my grandma’s #, so the whole day the phone was ringing nonstop with people looking to rent, the funniest part was that every single person that called was Chinese and did not speak a word of English.

That sucks...I once placed a classified ad for men seeking men for a friend of mine that was about a month from getting married. His phone was ringing off the hook...it was awesome.

That just caused a flash back to me from many moons ago. Apparently there was an illegal prostitution ring operating in the area where we lived called Bodies by G-d. Their phone number was one digit off from ours and apparently in an ad they placed in a bunch of adult papers they printed our number by mistake. We would get calls all hours of the day/night asking for anything and everything under the sun.

My father contacted the local PD and the FBI regarding the situation but they were having difficulty shutting it down. The proprietors learned that my family had sicked the PD on them and intentionally printed our number in even more magazines, even more preverted ones. It got to the point where my father started "offering" up women/men for them. He would say, "Do you want a man or a woman? Hair color?" Then he would say, We have X woman who meets your desires and go into a long description of the non-existant woman. The guy would give him an address, name, etc. and then he would claim they would be there in an hour. He kept all this information in a log and gave it to the authorities.

Our number was unlisted so there was no way they could find out where we lived. It was annoying but funny in hindsight.

W00t! Good for the newspaper! They settled, so at least the woman can recover some of the things she lost by replacing them. (I still hope the kitten is at a good home!)
