NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - General Motors will debut a new Saturn crossover vehicle, to be called "Outlook," next year.

The term "crossover" generally refers to SUVs that are engineered to behave more like cars than trucks.

With seating for up to eight passengers, the mid-sized Outlook will be larger than the current Saturn Vue, said Saturn spokesman Brian Brockman.

"The Outlook will be a key vehicle in our strategy to grow the Saturn brand," said Jill Lajdziak, GM's general manager for Saturn. "It will get us into the expanding midsize crossover segment with a vehicle that features dynamic design and a refined, sophisticated interior."

Since it is still under development, no photos and few details of the Outlook are available.

It will be the third all-new 2007 model-year vehicle for GM's Saturn division as the company tries to remake a brand best known for its no-haggle dealerships but not for particularly exciting vehicles.

The Saturn Sky roadster, unveiled at this year's Detroit Auto Show, will be the first Saturn to carry the division's new design style.

The very idea of a two-seat convertible from Saturn signals a clear change for the brand's friendly-but-dull image.

Based on the same platform as the Pontiac Solstice roadster, due out in September, the Sky features an even more futuristic and aggressive-looking body. The Sky has sharp angles and Corvette-like side scoops.

Also shown at that Auto Show was a concept version of the Saturn Aura, a sedan that was said to be very close to a production-ready vehicle. It also featured the new "European-influenced" body style and higher-grade interior that marked the new Saturn look.

The Sky will go on sale in the first quarter of 2006. The Aura is scheduled to go on sale next Summer and the Outlook is expected to come out in the last quarter of 2006.

SOURCES: GM Narrowing Engine Choices for '07 Saturn Outlook
Date Posted 08-12-2005

DETROIT — Sources close to General Motors have told Inside Line the automaker's new Lambda family of large crossover vehicles will be able to accommodate both V6 and V8 engines, as well as GM's new six-speed automatic transmission.

The first of the Lambda products, the all-new 2007 Saturn Outlook, reportedly will come equipped with either a 3.6-liter V6 or an updated version of the pushrod 5.3-liter V8, with GM's "Displacement on Demand" system installed to help boost EPA fuel economy, Inside Line has learned. GM also is considering whether to offer a hybrid gas-electric version of the Outlook and its sister models in 2008-'09.

The '07 Outlook also will be one of the first products to use GM's new six-speed automatic transmission.

The Outlook, which debuts in fall 2006, will be joined the following spring by the all-new 2008 GMC Acadia — the first car-based vehicle to wear the GMC badge — and later in the year by a successor to the Buick Rendezvous. The latter model, which will feature styling cues and inspiration from the Velite and Centieme concepts, also is expected to get a new name.

What this means to you: Buyers will be able to order GM's big crossover vehicles with a V8 engine — something you can't get in a minivan.
