Purpose:
In the alchemical tradition, creation of the Philosopher’s stone is the ultimate end to man’s needs. The stone has the power to cure disease, prolong life, and possesses the added benefit of being able to transmute metals, as in lead into gold.
As scienticians, we believe that such an object exists, and that it can be used for our own dastardly purposes.
Our theory is that a simple brita water filter can be used to make bad vodka, into good. In our case this meant turning a Vladimir™, into a Ketel One™. At $11.09 for 1.75 liter (Ketel is 11.99 for the 350 ml), Vladimir is a steal. It is, however, painful to drink, has a repugnant aftertaste, posesses a bouquet reminiscent of rubbing alcohol. Our working theory was that these terrible qualities were caused by a lack of proper filtration, and that running our Vlad through a charcoal filter would remove some of the impurities causing these odors and flavors.

I did this before. It worked to a degree but now that I'm out of college, haha it seems like I now gotta buy the expensive stuff without cheaping out :P.

I would imagine that after sampling 5 or 6 filterings (with comparative control samplings at each stage as well) that the validity of the final claims could be questionable.

Excellent point.

PURE GENIUS! You are an inspiration and a credit to both scienticians and drinkulators around the globe. I plan to recreate your experiment by the end of this weekend and hope (so very much) to report full corroboration. I thank you. Science thanks you. The world thanks you.

We tried this last quarter. Bought some $7 vodka in a plastic bottle. Worked relatively well, but ruined my damn $13 pur filter.

The second whiskey always goes down easier than the first. And the third is easier after that, and so on...

Though to be fair, they did claim to have tried the unadulterated **** vodka again after a few rounds, just to make sure it still tasted like crap.

My brother actually does this, and he says it works. He's been doing it for a couple of months, although who knows how often he changes the filter

This might be worthwhile if you plan on mixing up a large fruit punch for a party.

Hm.. good point - $7 for the vodka, $13 for the filter... why not just get a $20 bottle?

BTW, I think it's my turn to be the repost police:

I'm callin' you on that. That thread was last year. After 6 months it's not a repost. A link to the previous subject is helpful though.

doesn't work. one, it takes way to long to do, much easier to just mix it and be done, and two, it KILLS the filter. good for one bottle, then thats it.

While is does kill a Britta filter, probably because of the other filtration components in it besides the charcoal, there has to be somewhere to get plain activated charcoal filters that will work for a while.

or you just learn to deal with it  thats what we did. we filtered it through 10 times, and there was hardly any change

Repost, biatt...!!!

Anyways, are the filters really only good for one batch? Between the extra time and filter, it sounds not so clever. I wonder if this will work with other crappy alcohol.

Btw, you would do this with vodka you plan use for shooting chilled or sipping, not for mixing. Bad vodka is easily masked by mixing.

first paragraph, you should really read the whole thread before calling repost.

second one, possibly, but i think it's suck flavor and bite, not just bite

third, Vladi is almost impossible to mix. trust me. drink of choice last year. one shot hast to be masked by almost 2 pints OJ

1) fair nuff but

2)tequilla comes to mind, get all the alcohol and half the taste. bad tequilla is the worst and good tequilla is almost as bad tasting, just smoother. ;)

3)plenty of other cheap vodkas out there that go on sale year round.
