View Full Version : Grooming the dog

today, i decided that i was going to try to save some money and groom my own dog.
I poorly attempted to cut her hair, and it looked like a pack of rats came and chewed off my dogs hair.
so i bought dog hair clippers. My dog flipped out by the vibrations, and tried to run away and really freaked out, so i had my mom try to hold her down.
bath, haircut, toenail clipping, was chaos.
it took 2 hours.
now i wonder why i tried to save $50 a month on the dog grooming.
at least she looks better now, her hair is all one length, and i think i actually did a great job.
but the time and effort it took to get it done?
i dont know if its worth it.
tired. time for a drink.

Hope you bought the Oster set...high quality and will last. Just remember you have to oil the blades.

Other helpful tidbits......
Its easier to groom them if they are clean...so always wash and dry the dog before going over them with the clipper.

Invest in a grooming style book.....it will tell you blade size and ways to trim.

Dont bother getting the leash holder...we have one and all it does is collect dust. We were told that you had to have it to groom the dog alone.....not true.

Always groom them up on a higher table so that you are standing. It also prevents the dog from running away and most wont jump down.

Congrats on your first grooming experience!

i wouldn't attempt to groom my own dog, but then again it only costs me about $25 every 6 wks or so for the groomer to do it.

We've taken to clipping Otto ourselves. Not too hard for us, and worth the $40 it saves.

clancy gets groomed about every two months, it's about $40. i tried grooming him once, we all agreed that it wasn't a good idea.

because they are cute, loveable, don't shed - therefore don't promote allergies, very loyal, very intelligent, eat only about a cup of food a day, and i could go on. :P

I groom my parents dog when they don't have the hundred dollars to spend. Yes I said $100. My parents dog has to be sadated to groom him unless it is me he is too scared of me to bite or fight, I AM THE ALPHA.

But seriously looks much better than when I do it. I take the hair off to the skin. I shave the dog and it is a ****-zhu so it is suppossed to have long hair. FYI never show my parents dog a hair brush for your own safty.

very observant, but the sewing machine has been removed and a wooden top has been placed to make it into a table that i keep the phone and a lamp on. i did buy it at an antique show though.

OMG... Bwaaa haa haa haa...

Sorry Jane, but your pup really looks like it went through an ordeal with the cut...

Kinda like old childhood friends who's Moms insisted on cutting their hair instead of spending $8 on a barber.

(DAYUUUUUM!!! You got the "bowl cut" :hihi: :heh: :2far: :D )

hahah youre right...actually she HATED the whole haircut, which makes me wonder how my groomers have been putting up with it, and they tell me shes an ANGEL when i take her in...
she must just act up in front of me, or they put her to sleep and torture my dog at the groomers, i dunno, in any case, my dogs gonna be getting the ghetto BOWL CUT from now on....

and yes kimchi, my dog is REAL.
and about the drinking, yea, i decline to comment...its true, i do drink too much :disa:

I don't have to give my wiener a haircut since it is a smooth-hair. We do give it a bath once a month though and there's nothing wilder than a 2' long wet wiener.
