anyone know if apple is gonna come out with new ipods? i know the new generation ipods just came out, but are they going to come out with ipods of different storage size anytime soon? i also noticed that the bigger ipods don't come with a dock or remote anymore. so everyone needs to purchase the accessories separately now? planning on buying it sometime in late august, unless theres word of different sizes coming out. thanks.

Hard drive manufacturers are going to be moving to perpendicular storage to help boost storage capacity. Basically, the bits will "stand on end" instead of laying flat on the hard drive surface.

I know that Hitachi did this wacky animation that clearly illustrated this one, but I forget where to look. :)

They state that based on release dates, iPod Shuffles are a "Buy Now" and minis and regular ipods are unclear. If you look at the release history, they average a new model every 6-8 months with the last one being in February. I would hold off if I were you.

Nice little animation. I didn't understand it before when I heard it but my educational guess was confirmed by that lil flash demo. I don't have audio at work but does it just take up as much volume? So the platters are a bit thicker and the read/write head is more precise when reading a smaller data footprint.

The platter width shouldn't be much, if any thicker, not that it matters much. The heads will have to be more precise and the drive might have to use a bit more power, but overall it is a superior product. They have been talking about perp storage for ~3 years now.

It is going to be a while until it hits mainstream, even longer until it hits 2.5" and smaller drives, and even longer until it hits consumer products like the Ipod, I'd say they are ~1.5 years off right now. Better to just buy an Ipod now.

rumor has it that the video ipod may be on its way towards the end of sept. Steve Jobs will be making an announcement at MacWorld Paris.

I just got the 60GB iPod and love it. I dont have any need for the photo capabilities, but the color display is very nice. I like most of the aquaness of the display, except for the side scroll bars. They need to be rounded to match OS X

I personally don't think a new regular ipod or otherwise as everyone seems to be waiting these days, a proper 5th generation update will happen this year. But if you can wait might as well wait till after Macworld Paris to see if any updates are announced. If nothing happens then, It'll be a good wait to at least MW SF.
