ATI Technologies along with a number of industry partners unveiled its new product aimed at the mainstream market, the RADEON X800 GT, which is powered by the company’s most-recent graphics architecture for high-end graphics cards, but that comes at very affordable price-points.

“The RADEON X800 GT is efficiently designed to feature ATI’s break through image enhancement technology, including 3Dc , SmartShader HD , SmoothVision HD and Hyper Z HD , to offer High-Definition gaming power with unparalleled value,” a statement by ATI Technologies reads.

ATI RADEON X800 GT-based will be equipped with code-named R480 or R423 graphics processors made using 0.13 micron low-k manufacturing technology that have 8 pixel and 6 vertex processors enabled. By contrast, graphics cards with the mentioned visual processing units (VPUs) features 12 or 16 pixel processors. The VPU of the RADEON X800 GT will operate at 470MHz or 475MHz. ATI RADEON X800 GT-based graphics cards may be equipped with 128MB, 256MB or 512MB of memory that has 256-bit interface and functions at up to 980MHz.

Recommended pricing for 128MB version of the RADEON X800 GT is expected to be around $139, whereas 256MB flavour is expected to cost below $200, the level at which ATI sells its RADEON X800 product that features VPU with higher performance.

With the RADEON X800 GT Markham, Ontario-based ATI Technologies wants to offer its customers something better than the GeForce 6600 GT, which has become very popular because of affordable price and relatively high performance. It is unclear whether ATI has enough R423 and R480 chips originally developed for high-end graphics cards to satisfy the needs of mainstream market. It is also uncertain what will happen to ATI RADEON X700-series of products, which is also sold in $100 - $200 price-range.

Currently four of ATI Technologies’ add-in-board partners offer RADEON X800 GT-based graphics cards, including GeCube, HIS, Sapphire and Tul Corp. All of the mentioned manufacturers have received ATI’s certification of their RADEON X800 GT products currently offered.

....so now we have the X800, X800XL, X800GT, X800XT, X800XT-PE, ....... not to mention the OEM variants (X800 Lite OEM, etc.) Waaayyyyy too confusing.

At least nVidia segments their lower-end cards with a lower model number (6800 / 6600 / 6200). ATI's moving into a straight X800 naming scheme for most of their cards (minus the top performing X850)

..isnt there some kinda X850 too?
I always love it when people 'introduce' a product with a lower model number than what's already been released lol

It'd be like Intel re-releasing Pentium 4.. and trying to wow us hahaha

I'll stick with my 6800Ultra,

At least three of them. The X850 is the ATI's bleeding-edge card.

Actually, Intel DOES re-release lower speed grades of their products to saturate the market. For example, when the Prescott came out, the main speed was 3.2GHz, but they also released 3.0GHz and 2.8GHz parts for those who couldn't afford the high-end 3.2GHz part.

AMD did the exact same thing with the Athlon X2 3800+ (before that, the lowest speed X2 CPU was the 4000+

You release the top of the line to make people go "wow" and sell to those with money and want the latest and greatest. The rest go, "gee, that is cool, but I can't afford that!" Then they release the lower priced (and spec) versions to try to draw in them.

Well, ATI is at it again -- they have now announced the X800GTO card (putting performance right in between the X800GT and X800XL).

These guys ARE crazy. :)

Confusing, but it does give buyers a nice selection of video cards to choose from.
Finally an option to the 6600GT.

ATI cards still cannot use Shader Model 3.0 like the newer NVidea ones can. They have one on the way, but it has been delayed a few times. I think the GTO or whatever is to tide things over until the new one is ready.

hmmm HAHAHA too bad no one's been wowed. the only upside is that your pc doubles as a grill!

anyway, this makes me mad. ati is so dumb! Posers!!
they always release their cards after nVidia and then optimize something after they test nVidia's. ati can go down with intel for all i care!!
dumb apple!!!! why do they have to save intel like that!!! they can go down with ati and intel for all i care!!
i hope ati's GT's dont sell.
sorry i'm a little passionate(spelling??)

why did they ever start in the 9,000s they should have started where nvidia did at like 4000

ya know like 4500 pro 4800pro etc. so they would be like in the 5000 or 6000 like nvidia now. who came up this the dumb x800 whatever x my butt

nate you sound like a little kid... go play runescape!

im not saying i like ati more than nVidia, but they have been very smart in their marketing and placement of vid cards all along the timeline... but im not paying 1000$ for a video card especially from ati or nvidia... they both need to lower their prices.
