Just bought an iPod from the apple store yesterday. $299 - student discount.
anyways, I'm pretty new to the whole iPod/iTunes system, so I've got some questions for you guys:
1. my iPod is the 20 gigger and has the color screen. so does that mean its a 4th gen iPod? i've seen people refer to "iPod photo", "iPod color" etc... is that the same thing? (i havent been keeping track of all the generations of iPods). reason I ask is because...
2. I need a case for my iPod. preferably a "skin" type of case. can anyone recommend a good one?
3. Do I have to use iTunes to transfer songs?
4. Why is the firewire cable for the iPod so expensive? ($19 online at the apple.com) The reason I would like to use firewire is simply, I'm all out of USB ports but I have 3 unused firewire ports.

1 - 1st gen has moving scroll wheel, 2nd gen was trackpad based scroll wheel, theird gen had 4 buttons above the scroll wheel, 4th gen is click wheel based. Yours has the click wheel so its a gen 4
2 - I am looking just like you.
3 - Yes, or there are some third party apps that did do it, i dont know if they still work.
4 - Apple cables are expensive, but that cable is expensive due to the proprietary ipod connector. I wish apple would ship the firewire cable instead of the usb cable. My powerbook has USB 1.1, so i could use firewire.
2. I'm using the iSkin Evo2 case.. its not bad i guess.. i don't find aynthing wrong with it..comes with a screen protector...and if you get this skin, you'll prolly want to take the back clip off, cuz it can melt on to the back of your ipod...
I have a black case.. so it attracts dust alot.

Check out the forum at macrumors.com. They have a classified section and I was able to get the firewire cable for the ipod for only $5. I also picked up the Apple bluetooth mouse for $25. Ofcourse both were used but they were in good condition.
