Continuing decreases on the horizon?

NEW YORK - U.S. retail gasoline prices last week fell to their lowest level since early April, a survey said Sunday.

The average price for self-serve, regular unleaded gas in the United States was $2.8714 a gallon on Aug. 25, a 15.42 cent decline off a record high two weeks ago, according to a survey edited by industry analyst Trilby Lundberg.

The drop was the biggest two-week decline since a 20 cent fall on Sept. 23, 2005, when refineries were coming back online after being knocked out by Hurricane Katrina.

The August decline follows a month of increases. Barring unexpected events, further price decreases are likely because stocks of gasoline are high and consumer demand is likely to decrease as the summer driving season ends, Lundberg said.

The decline brought prices to their lowest level since April 7, when gasoline was $2.665 a gallon.

At $2.60 a gallon, Des Moines, Iowa, had the lowest average price for self-serve regular unleaded gas on August 25, while Honolulu, Hawaii, had the highest at $3.23 a gallon.

The nationwide Lundberg Survey looks at thousands of gasoline stations every two weeks.

Anyone notice that oil has slid about $5/barrel the past two days? :gle:

http://www.raymondkwan.com/uploader2/files/812/chart.gif

NEW YORK - Oil prices shed more than $2 Thursday to settle at their lowest level since June 2005, after the U.S. government reported higher-than-expected inventories of gasoline, heating oil and diesel fuel amid warm winter temperatures.

An unseasonably mild winter in the Northeast and Midwest has led to a buildup in inventories and, as a result, weaker prices.

“There is no winter at all, thus we have a lot of supplies with no home and prices have nothing to do but fall,” said James Cordier, president of Liberty Trading Group in Tampa, Florida.

Light, sweet crude for February dropped $2.73, or 4.7 percent, to settle at $55.59 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The settlement follows a 4.5 percent decline on Wednesday and represents the lowest settlement price since June 15, 2005.

U.S. crude inventories declined last week by 1.3 million barrels to 319.7 million barrels compared with the previous week, the Energy Information Administration reported Thursday. Analysts on average had expected crude stocks to rise by 930,000 barrels, according to a survey by Dow Jones Newswires.

However, distillate inventories, which include diesel fuel and heating oil, increased by 2 million barrels to 135.6 million barrels as warm winter weather hurt demand. Distillate stocks were expected to increase by an average of 1.15 million barrels.

Weather has become an increasingly important factor in the price of oil in recent years. A warm winter and a mild hurricane season last year have combined with a forecast for warmer-than-normal temperatures this winter to pressure oil prices.

Demand for heating oil has been running 20 percent to 30 percent below normal for most of the past five weeks, said Man Financial commodities analyst Edward Meir, in a note to clients.

Meanwhile, gasoline inventories in the U.S. swelled by 5.6 million barrels last week to 209.5 million barrels, the EIA said, compared to analysts’ estimate for an average increase of 1 million barrels.

Gasoline prices fell 6.19 cents to settle at $1.4870 a gallon on Nymex. Heating oil futures fell 4.5 cents to end at $1.5431 a gallon, while natural gas prices fell a fraction of a penny to settle at $6.162 per 1,000 cubic feet.

If energy prices keep falling, OPEC may be moved to reduce oil production again. After oil prices began deflating last fall, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries agreed to a 1.2 million barrel-a-day cut in crude output beginning in November and another 500,000 barrel-a-day cut set to begin Feb. 1.

Western states have recently seen snow and freezing temperatures, and two major snow storms hit Colorado last week. But Fadel Gheit, senior energy analyst with Oppenheimer & Co., notes that about 80 percent of heating fuel demand comes from the densely populated Northeast and Midwest, where temperatures have been balmy.

Gheit said last week’s snow storms — which forced hundreds of canceled flights and road closures — may have contributed to the decline in demand for gasoline and jet fuel.

Don't know about your neck of the woods, but the rise here has been gradual...and has somewhat mirrored the move up in oil prices. It's gone up $.16, but took more than 4 days.

Just saw the chart, thought it seemed like a decent move down.

Around me, the gas stations did their usual pre-holiday gas spike a bit before Christmas (went up from about 2.15 to around 3.35), but the price has been dropping a bit of late (down to 2.23-2.29 range). I expect to see it drop more next week, since the second week of most schools' break ends this week (along with the crude price dropping).

I'm not typically one to join a long line to save a few cents on gas, so if one place is offering $2.46 and the one across the street is $2.48 with no line, I'll pay the extra $0.60 to fill my 20 gallon tank and get the heck out of there a few minutes quicker. I think there are plenty of other less inconveniet ways for me to make up the $0.60 difference (that's assuming I care about 60 cents to begin with... )

Me too, barely though. My grandfather started a family business back in the 70s to upgrade gas stations when unleaded and it's various grades started to appear. Storage tanks, piping, pumps, awnings, concrete work, etc. They were busy as hell right up through the late 80s but when he died in '89 my family dissolved the business. So if anyone ever feels like building your own gas station, my father and uncle are the guys to ask for advice. :hihi:

Never knew that. Thanks for the heads up. I remember as a kid, putting leaded fuel in my moped and wondering what "unleaded" was. That was also back when it was about $.80/gallon.

Ahh, the good ol' days...

I remember using leaded for scooters and mopeds.

As far as the higher altitudes go - b/c the air is thinner the engines produce less hp and tq than they would at sea level.

The slide continues. Let's hope the warm weather keeps up, especially in the NE.

LONDON - Oil prices fell about $2 a barrel Tuesday to their lowest levels in 18 months in a market expecting more mild weather and rising inventories in the United States.

Temperatures in the U.S. Northeast have been above normal this winter, curbing demand for heating fuels in the world’s largest heating oil market.

Market watchers are also looking for a rise in U.S. petroleum inventories in this week’s government report.

Light, sweet crude for February delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange dropped $2.04 to $54.05 a barrel in electronic trading by afternoon in Europe. The front-month contract last closed below $54 a barrel in June 2005.

February Brent crude at London’s ICE Futures exchange fell as much as $1.96 to $53.64 a barrel.

Traders said a break through key support levels triggered a wave of sell orders.

The Nymex oil contract slipped 22 cents to settle at $56.09 a barrel Monday after falling nearly 8 percent last week.

Monday’s session was volatile, however, as prices rose as high as $57.72 on reports that OPEC oil ministers are considering another cut in output, and worries that a dispute between Russia and Belarus could result in energy shortages in parts of Europe.

The halt to the flow of Russian oil through Belarus had supported prices Monday, but ample supplies in Germany, Poland and Ukraine were expected to keep refineries running.

Nigeria’s oil minister Edmund Daukoru discouraged talk of any immediate action to support prices by OPEC, which recently resolved to cut output by 1.7 million barrels per day.

“Let’s implement the 1.7 million fully then we’ll see if there’s a need for additional cuts,” Daukoru told Dow Jones Newswires.

If OPEC announced another production cut — on top of the 1.2 million barrel-a-day reduction that began in November, and the 500,000 barrel-a-day cut set to begin Feb. 1 — analysts say prices would likely rise. Still, OPEC’s previous cuts haven’t been able to keep crude prices above $60 a barrel for long, largely because many traders doubt that the cuts are fully enforced.

Forecasters expect temperatures in the U.S. Northeast to drop to normal levels over the next couple of weeks.

But heating oil futures fell more than half a cent to $1.5498 a gallon on Tuesday while natural gas rose 6.2 cents to $6.440 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires expect U.S. petroleum inventories to rise in government data to be released Wednesday by the U.S. Energy Department. Crude inventories were expected to climb an average of 820,000 barrels, the survey showed.

Crude stocks normally fall this time of year, but with imports rebounding from a recent slump, inventories are likely to rise, said analyst Phil Flynn of Alaron Trading Corp. in Chicago.

Petroleum product stocks are expected to increase for the fourth straight week. Distillate stocks, which include heating oil and diesel fuel, are seen rising by an average of 1.9 million barrels while gasoline stocks are projected to increase by 2.5 million barrels.

Interesting read...

If it seems like gasoline prices are quick to skyrocket when the price of oil goes up, but then take their sweet 'ol time coming back down when crude prices sink, the answer is simple: They do.

"There is a rocket and feather aspect," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

And the reason seems to be simple economics.

The service stations are still selling the same amount of gasoline when wholesale prices fall, said Kloza, "so there's no reason to drop."

"Human nature being what it is, [service stations] typically react [to a spike in oil prices] by pushing prices higher, even before they replace their inventories," said Geoff Sundstrom, spokesman for the motorist organization AAA.

"And [again] human nature being what it is, unless other stations bring their prices down, he's going to be very reluctant to bring down his."

But before you boycott your local Qwickie Mart, Kloza said to remember that gas stations typically make very little money off the gas they sell, maybe a gross of 15 cents a gallon.

Out of that, they have to pay all their expenses, including fees to credit card companies that can eat up half of that profit.

"[People] think of every sector of the business as being run by John D. Rockefeller or J.R. Ewing," said Kloza. "People don't realize how little profit there is."

Service stations pay their bills on money made when people go inside to get things like coffee and Ring Dings, which are often sold at a decent mark-up.

The real money in oil, he said, is made at the production, refining, and, especially, the trading levels.

"All these exchanges are setting records," in terms of the number of contracts changing hands at places like the New York Mercantile Exchange, where brokerage houses will take a cut for each transaction. "That's where the big bucks are made."

Eventually, the free market steps in and prices begin going down when other nearby stations reduce their price.

And as opposed to government controls that would prevent stations from charging a little more when they can, AAA says that's just how things should work.

"The best way to assure a stable supply of fuel is to allow a free market to operate," said Sundstrom.

With oil prices sinking some 15 percent since the beginning of the year, Kloza said gasoline prices are sure to follow, although it will just take a few weeks for the cheaper product to work its way into the system.

But Sundstrom warns consumers to not get complacent.

"We anticipate high prices over time, regardless of what they see in the short term," he said. "We'd hate to see consumers think our energy problems have been solved and jump into a new car that gets the same fuel economy, or worse even less, than the one they have now."

I have to agree on the credit card fees eating up half of their 15 cents a gallon - they get between 6-8% ON THE DOLLAR so it's 12 to 16 cents per 2 bucks (gallon) that gets munched by cc fees. I think that if America is going to get fed up with someone (some company) that they are the ones who should get some of the heat.

Just heard that the reason why gas is so high in California is due to a Opossum and a raccoon that damaged some pumps...

:eek3:

With pump prices up 20 cents in the last two weeks and daylight saving time three weeks early, it feels like spring is coming a little early this year. But if the typically seasonal pattern of pump prices holds, consumers in most parts of the country can expect some relief by Memorial Day.

Though the summer driving season — and the resulting pick up in demand — is months away, gas prices have moved higher as refiners take their plants offline for annual maintenance and upgrades. As production levels dip, worries about short-term supplies send futures prices higher, according to Tom Kloza, who tracks gasoline prices at the Oil Price Information Service.

“This is trader lead,” he said. “There were a lot of refinery problems, and that’s been the catalyst this year for an earlier-that-normal late first quarter surge.”

That first quarter surge typically come as gasoline production dips as refiners switch to making the blends that burn more cleanly in summer months. Over the past 22 years, gasoline futures have risen 57 percent over their winter lows, according to Kloza. Based on that historical average, prices are near their normal seasonal peak.

But this has not been a normal season for refiners. A fire knocked a 170,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Texas offline last month. Last week, a power outage shut down production at a 100,000 barrel-per-day refinery in the Los Angeles area. Nationwide, refinery output slipped to 85 percent of capacity last month and inventories have fallen sharply.

As a result, gasoline inventories last week fell by 3.8 million barrels to 216.4 million barrels, a sharper decline than the 1.4 million-barrel drop that analysts had expected. Gasoline imports have been running lower than normal for this time of year.

Meanwhile, demand has been running stronger than usual for this time of year, especially for diesel fuel.

That’s been good news for the refiners that have kept their production online; profit margins have more than doubled since January, according to Friedman Billings and Ramsey energy analyst Jacques Rousseau. He figures refiners' profit margins jumped to $22.05 a barrel on March 9 from $10.45 a barrel at the start of the year.

With pump prices rising, that profit surge has also brought complaints that consumers are being gouged.

“We’ve allowed so many mergers in the downstream industry that are markets are noncompetitive,” said Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen's energy program told CNBC. “Our energy trading markets, where crude oil and gas prices are set, aren’t transparent enough … There’s no government regulation there."

But neither domestic refiners nor U.S. regulators have any control over global gasoline markets. Higher pump prices in the U.S. typically bring an increase in imported gasoline, which helps ease tight inventories. Analysts say that — barring further unplanned refinery outages — tight inventories should ease up by mid-April, taking the pressure off retail prices.

Gasoline dealers should also be free of the bottlenecks that popped up last year, after a switch to ethanol as a key summer blend ingredient put a crimp on supplies and a sharp spike in prices in some areas. A boom in ethanol production since then has produced ample supplies this year, and prices are down sharply from last year’s peak levels.

But drivers in California, where pump prices have posted the biggest gains, may continue to face price spikes even after the rest of the country gets some relief. That’s because refining capacity in California has not been keeping up with demand. And because relatively few refiners outside the region can produce gasoline that meets the state’s tough environmental standards, inventories there will likely remain tighter than elsewhere in the country

“It is a very clean fuel, but the price you pay for that is that you get isolated from the rest of the country,” said Kloza.

Not sure about the tax, but I know Hawaii regulates prices that distributors can charge.

I hate price controls. IIRC, Hawaii only has 2 distributors. Great way to chase them out of business--limit profits to the point where they might just say, "F it. We don't need this market that badly."

Gas here in HI is $3.45 but I found out today that HI temporarily suspended the state gas tax last year and never restarted it, so if they do it is going to make an immediate hike to the cost of gas here.

I honestly don't blame the oil companies from big profits. It's a business like all others. They provide a product that we demand. How come no one says, "Geez, did you see how much Walmart made this year"? If the Government wants to help drop the prices of fuel, they should reduce the tax on the final product and stop making the public believe that its all the fault of "BIG OIL". :hmm:

I don't fault them for profits... however if they are gonna make a profit, then WHY do they need Government subsidies on top of their profits? The Government doesn't subsidize Wal-Mart last I checked... so hey, their profit is their fair earnings.

This is what seems unfair to me. They are having their cake and eating it too at our expense.

It's the only way the government has any leverage to force them into research of alternative fuels.

Problem is, you take away subsidies and the losses get passed to the consumer. Either way, consumers lose.
