I'm gonna venture a guess that this area's gas supply was probably largely supported by the pipelines in the Gulf Coast that got knocked out of commission.

Gasoline Rises for the Fourth Day as Katrina Shuts Refineries
Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Gasoline rose as much as 7.3 percent after Hurricane Katrina shut at least eight refineries, reducing U.S. fuel production by more than 10 percent and leading to scattered shortages.
Gasoline futures have soared this week after the storm swept through Louisiana and Mississippi, flooding refineries and shutting down pipelines. Pump prices yesterday jumped 50 cents to more than $3 a gallon in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota, said Brad Proctor, founder of Gaspricewatch, which relies on volunteers to track retail markets.
``We have a significant shortage'' of gasoline, Dariusz Kowalczyk, senior investment strategist at CFC Seymour Ltd. said by phone from Hong Kong. ``There's the continued shutdown of a lot of refineries, inventories are significantly down from this time last year and we're only halfway through the hurricane season.''
Gasoline for October delivery rose as much as 16.47 cents to $2.42 a gallon on the New York Mercantile Exchange and was up 10.47 cents in after-hours electronic trading at 11:23 a.m. London time. Crude oil for October delivery was up 38 cents at $69.32 a barrel. Crude prices have lagged behind those of gasoline after President George W. Bush's pledge to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
``I've never seen anything as devastating to the refining industry,'' said Dan Robinson, president of Placid Refining Co., a closely held company. ``There are a number of refineries that have suffered significant damage due to flooding and water, and those that were flooded, I presume, will have a considerable amount of work to do to get their plants running again.''
Record Fuel Costs
Panicked motorists formed lines up to a mile long at stations in Georgia, draining pumps days before the three-day Labor Day weekend. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue urged the public to delay purchases as long as possible.
Stan Sheetz, president of Sheetz Inc., an Altoona, Pennsylvania-based owner of 315 filling stations in six states in the Southeast, called the situation a ``crisis.''
Even before the storm, record fuel costs were hurting consumer spending, curbing the U.S. economic expansion. Growth slowed to a 3.3 percent annual rate in the second quarter as people spent less because of rising energy costs, the Commerce Department said yesterday.
supposedly it hit 1.20/L today... last night some gas stations were already 1.16/L

Over the weekend, regular just went for 2.99/gal in some places and 3.05 in others. All other grades are 3.10 or higher. I'll be amazed if it goes down to 2.49 but I doubt with Thanksgiving and Xmas around the corner.
9/19/05 - $2.79 reg, $2.99 premium in western pa (butler). Still haven't fueled up anything but the bike (twice) since hurricane katrina hit. Don't plan to unless I have to!

When Katrina hit, I never thought to myself how high the gas prices would be. I just watched the news and thinking how terrible the destruction and deaths that would accumulate. Never did I give a thought on how high gas would be until I actually went to get gas a few days later and got sticker shock.
Now what makes me feel guilty is that Rita is coming and I think to myself that those fools better seek cover and immediately after my second thought was should I get gas now or before Rita makes landfall. Does that make me a jerk?
BTW: 2.89 for regular in MD so the decrease has been a steady decline.

2.99 for exxon supreme. I noticed that gas is going back up. The royal farms across the street from the exxon station I went to had regular for 3.14 .
I saw a story on the news about how refinery profits have jumped from $.33/gal a year ago to $.90+/gal now.

Dang some of your have been getting the go juice cheap! I topped off today at $2.69 (sign said $2.73) - has to be the cheapest in town.
I top it off when I hit about 100 miles on the trip odometer. At 13mpg and 2.70 a gallon, at least I am getting the little red thing to touch the "F" on the fuel gauge for only $20. (LOL)
And to think, I remember when gas hit a buck a gallon - we all freaked! I also remember when we had even/odd day rationing, lines at the pump, and the stuff hadn't hit a buck by a long shot yet.
Then again, I also remember when AMC was working on a new leading edge technology car... which was named the Pacer.:woohoo:
