5 of the San Diego Chargers walk into my husband's restaraunt and sit down to eat lunch. Their bill turned out to be about $100, and first off, they only tipped $3.00. Come on now, you guys are freaking millionaires, you can afford the typical 15%. Not only that, they asked for a discount! I'm sorry, but if it were me waiting on them, I would've told them to win a f@cking superbowl and then MAYBE I'd think about giving them a discount. Arrogant asses.

I remember a quote/saying from long ago that has really suck with me all these years. Basically, its that those who were born into wealth are generally very charitable to those not as well off. Meanwhile, those who work themselves up from non-wealth are not as charitable. It's sort of interesting...

But with your Charger players, as with most athletes these days, these are young kids who probably did not have as much money as they do now. They are immature and childish who have tons of money now with little responsibility. That's why you see a lot of young atheletes do stupid things. Plus the worst part is that they probably are used to privelege now, and so they generally don't think of other people's welfare and effort, such as the one your Husband put in for them.

It's really sad and I do feel for you, GG. Just call them immature, spoiled, f*cktards and be done with them. Don't spend your time and mental capital on useless people like that and teach your kids to be better than that.

I have a hard time believing that. My guess is that the reverse would be more likely to be true.

I can believe that. Those that are rich as kids or young adults, tend to throw around money because it is their parents and it makes them look cool. They probably are not being 'charitable', but are tipping more than others nonetheless.

Tell the local newspaper. They would totally have a blurb about that. Not to mention the free advertising.

Having NFL players in your resturant and people seeing that may cause you to have more business, yea they tip poorly, but if they come there every so often, people may come to the resturant just in the hopes of seeing these atheletes.

Then again, other people might avoid these restraunts just to avoid the Chargers 'cause we know what sorry sacks they are. If you are a "special" (and I mean that in the most derogatory way) person and you get good service you should tip just like anyone else. You being famous doesn't put food on the table of your server. A server's primary source of income is tips. They don't care how much extra business comes in next month because of a football player coming in if they can't feed their family/pay the rent/afford tuition. The "special" person's presence does not benifit the server, it benifits the resturaunt.

Something that strikes me as odd about the *****tipper database, they consider anything below 17% to be a bad tip. I was raised to believe that an average tip is 15%. 10% for poor serveice, 20% for exceptional service. I feel these are fair tips. If the service is exceptionaly poor, like when the server forgot about me for an hour, I might even leave no tip. When service is extrordinary I might even leave 25% or more for a tip. I generaly do tip 20% or more, but if they expect more than 15% for droping food off at the table and filling my drinks they will be disapointed.

For any profesional atheletes out there here's how to tip:

Tip at least 15% of the charges for average or better service.
Tax is not figured in to the tip (if the bill is $10 and tax is $0.80, tip on the $10, not $10.80)
Conversly, don't discount a tip. If you get 1/2 off a $40 bill, double the tip (unless the server's behavior is why you are getting 1/2 off). No one is giving the server 1/2 off their rent. They served you $40 of food, tip for $40 of food, even if it only cost you $20.
Tip extra for small children, or difficult older children. (minimum $1, but 1% or 2% per child for larger bills is also appropriate)
"Average Service" means that they brought you your order and kept your glass full, NOT that they worshiped you. Additionaly a pleasant demenor deserves a 20% base tip and sincere effort to make you comfortable and get everything you want quickly should be 25%.
Don't hold a situation out of the servers control against them when calculating the tip. If something ruined your meal that wasn't in their control, ask the manager for a discount, don't take it out on the server.

No, my husband has never given bad service, ever. If he did, he surely wouldn't be starting management training tomorrow.

Grimm -
I was just stating an idea. They are/were poor tippers. Maybe something was wrong with the service (doubt it) or it was a mistake or some sort. Maybe someone stole the tip off the table. I am not advocating sucking up to them and trying to get them as repeat customers if they cant tip, however, them or other athletes frequenting the resturant will make some people more inclined to visit. And maybe other athletes tip better!

That tipper site is stupid. Just a site for waiters and waitresses to complain. It is a good idea in theory but as we all know in every group, wait staff included, there are those who are bad at it and complain when they dont get what the good people get.

Gothic Girl

Nah, there was nothing wrong with the tip being stolen or anything like that. They're just really poor tippers. They get the football players in there all the time, and every single time, they tip really crappy.

modena

I think someone should just stand up for the place and post a sign saying "Athletes can tip 15% too. If you arent smart enough to compute it, ask your server to give you a hand!" If the poor tip is a common practice that is....

That's when the restraunt should take care of their employees. The manager should just ask the footbal players to leave when they come in. Tell them that if they were not happy with the service last time it hasn't changed, they should find another place to eat.

I have never worked as a server. I would hate the job. But the people who work that job should not have to put up with people who choose not to pay them. While the resturaunt does pay them $2.50 an hour or so, that's not real pay, it's a polite fiction. Servers are paid by the people they serve, in the form of tips. It's wrong to stiff a server who did their job. Just like it would be wrong to stiff a gardener or plumber. It's just that these other services have an agreement on the amount paid before the work is done. There is an agreement with a server also, but it is performanced based. While there might be some disagreement on the level of service that was provided, any reasonable person can see that someone attempting to give good service and receiving less than 10% was robbed.

It's theft, pure and simple.
Sure, there is no formal legal agreement, but there is an implied agreement. Every compitant adult should be aware of it. Having wealth does not exempt people from this agreement.

Yeah, I don't think I'm trying to say that it's correct (and if my post does say that I apologize and blame it on my strange sleeping schedule). It's just been something I've tried to validate by comparison to see if its true.

Just because I can, I revert you all to the Reservoir Dogs tip discussion:

(Mr. Pink doesn't believe in tipping waiters / waitresses automatically)

Our girl was nice.

She was okay, but she wasn't anything special.

What's something special? Take you out back and suck your ****?

I'd go over 12 percent for that.

I've been here a long ****ing time and she's only refilled my coffee three times. I think she should be able to refill my coffee at least six times.

Excuse me, Mr. Pink, but I think the last ****ing thing you need is another cup of coffee.
