That is still a pretty broad topic. Is there an era they prefer? Disco, Old School. 80's, hip hop, techno?
Sounds like a job for....K-Tel Records Presents!
(OK for you kiddies- this was an ad we saw all over TV in the olden days- they repackaged songs into "One Amazing collection for one low, low price! Fantastic hits! Fantastic stars!"- much more obnoxious than the Time Life collections you see now)

K-Tel Records and Tapes
By Patrick Mondout
"Between 1971 and 1985, K-Tel International blessed us with inexpensive records filled to the brim with the best music they could license. Well, that's one way to put it. The K-Tel albums I bought in the mid-to-late Super70s featured an unhealthy dose of K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Gloria Gaynor, and -- for reasons unknown to the author -- Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes! With such titles as Southern Fried Rock, Disco Rocket, and 24 Greatest Dumb Ditties, K-Tel seemed to dominate the compilation album market. Whatever can be said about the quality of their selections, cover art, or even the vinyl they recorded on, K-Tel has remarkable name-recognition among those of us who grew up in the Super70s."

HEY I'm old enough and have been to enough weddings to let you know that the best music NOT to play is that HIP HOP/RAP/HEAVY METAL stuff...especially if there are grandparents, aunts, uncles whom are older in attendance..Just keep the age group in mind..Sorry to say it but..
Old people LOVE the chicken dance, and polkas, and some old slow stuff from say..Frank Sinatra so that they can dance close with their Honey's like they did when they were teens (when I say old people, I mean like over 60)
almost everyone loves the hokey stuff like YMCA,ELECTRIC SLIDE, CHA CHA BOOGIE
or things they probably took the time to learn at one time so that they can actually participate in the "fun stuff" at weddings..
Of course, there is the usual selection of dance music..fast/slow/in between
Just remember....people are generously giving to the bride and groom and expect to have a fun time at the reception..make sure there is enough available stuff from all generations of music...including a bit of jazz to play during dinner..

It really depends on the demographic...(which goes along the lines of what Obby was saying).
Do you want something with a beat to make things seem livelier (sp?) or do you actually want people on a dance floor?
Who's your general audience?

Lately I've been unable to get Professor Longhair's version of "Junco Partner" out of my head. Actually, he's got a lot of good stuff if you think 50's style R+B boogie-woogie would go over big.

if they are of the Fresh Prince generation and they aren't too PC to get offended by lines like "Tonto, jump on it! jump on it! jump on it!", then perhaps try "Apache" by the Sugarhill Gang. there is a dance to accompany the music, and someone is sure to know it.

:stupid:
i perform at weddings as a magician or emcee. and i can tell you, as much as ppl say they dislike the chicken dance or YMCA or the electric slide or anything similar, if your DJ is a good one, they can really crank up a party with those songs if they know what they're doing. b/c those are the few songs that ppl from almost all recent generations know. and it's a time for ppl to be happy. so just suck up your pride and just do the chicken dance i say!
however, if this is an asian wedding....good luck with THAT one...
