Seiko Epson is showing a prototype mini-projector using an LED light source at the ongoing Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) 2005 in Berlin, Germany (September 2-7).
With a footprint of 13.8 by 10.3cm (smaller than a sheet of A6 paper) and a slender profile, the 500g prototype projector can fit easily into the palm of your hand, the company claims.
Although the company has no immediate plans to market the mini-projector, company representatives believes that the prototype demonstrates how compact mobile 3LCD projectors could one day become.
“Projectors using 3LCD technology already have advantages in terms of bright, natural images that are easy on the eyes,” said Koichi Kubota, general manager of projector marketing at Epson.
Epson had 11.3% of the front projector market worldwide in fiscal year 2004 (April 2004-March 2005). This is the first Epson 3LCD projector to use an LED light source.
In addition to providing increasingly compact designs, the use of an LED light source allows for quick start-up and shut-down times, as well as longer running times, the company stated.
