I joined the modern world and just got DSL. The DSL modem is hooked up directly to the main computer, the SMC wireless router is in another room . My main computer can see the other computer (Dell notebook) and it also sees my 3 ReplayTV's. All that equipment works find and the Dell notebook uses the printer on the main computer. I don't have a print server so the main computer stays on for the printer to work. My SMC router has great signal 97%. For the life of me, I can't get the Dell notebook to see the main computer. I tried going to "My Network Places", I tried various places in Control Panel, with no luck. Any advice would be appreciated.

Why don't you hook up the DSL modem to the wireless router? Are both computers in the same workgroup?

Hi bachviet, the reason the modem is not hooked up to the router is because Verizon couldn't make my DSL work because I was too far from their central office so they made it work by stepping me down from 3meg to 750kb and they gave me a dedicated phone line so I don't need filters but they located the phone line at an inconvenient spot, no where near the router. I can't move the router location easily because I ran cat-6 all over the house going to the router, the only place I don't have cat-6 is the 30 or so feet from the router to the computer. Up until now, everything worked great, my 3 ReplayTv's and two computers all saw each other fine. All Replays can be played on either of the two computers just fine or on any Replay. I can get a router/modem combo from Verizon for only $15 but I'm afraid to disrupt my current systme since it runs so smoothly and it means that I would have to relocate the modem and move all those cat-6 wires, that would be a lot of work. I thought the easiest solution was to leave the main computer on and network through the wireless connection to the router. That's how I share printers with the two computers, through the router and without using a print server.
Why don't you hook up the DSL modem to the wireless router? Are both computers in the same workgroup?

Can you run another CAT5 or CAT6 cable from the modem to the router?

I can run another cat-6 from the modem to the router but how would it be hooked up? The modem only has one ethernet port and that is an out to the computer.

Do you have anything shared on the main computer? And is sharing enabled.

I don't know if I have anything shared, I must because my computer and my daughters laptop interact with each other. How can I check to see if sharing is enabled?

Control panel > Network Connection > Internet connection or the Network adapter Properties.. Then select the advanced tab.. In that you should have sharing checked..

DeltaForce, I don't see Internet Connections in Control Panel, but I do see "Internet Options" but when I go to properties>Advanced tab, I don't see anything about sharing.

In the Control Panel, double click on "Network Connections". By "Internet connection", I think DeltaForce meant the network adapter. Right click on it and select Properties. Rather than the "Advanced" tab, look in the General tab under "This connection uses the following items:" - there is a check box for "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks".

Hi Markel, I did find sharing another way, like this, Network connections>Wireless Network Connections>Properties>Advanced then I put a check into "Internet Connection Sharing" and that said "Allow others network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" I then went to Network Connections on my remote computer and created a new connection manually. The remote computer couldn't connect and neither could my host (main) computer connect. I then took that sharing check out of my host computer and can then connect on my host computer. I tried numerous times, each time I put a check in that sharing area my host computer stopped connnecting, when I took the check out it could connect again. This is maddening.
