the RAM that comes with the dell 5100 (intel 945G chipset) has a clock speed of 400mhz. can i replace this ram with those w/ 533mhz clock speed?

Yes (as long as it's DDR2) but there won't be any performance increase.

cool...any harm in mixing speeds? 400mhz ram + 533mhz ram?

there wont be any harm, but boths sticks will run at the speed of the slower one.

Should run both stick at the same speed otherwise you are not optimizing the dual channel setup.
