Nude beach 'worm warning'

AN opponent to Queensland's possible first legal nude beach says the plan should be stopped because "unadorned worms are preyed upon by birds".

South-east Queensland's Burnett Shire Council, which covers 92km of pristine coast, is poised to lobby the State Government by the end of the year to declare a naked-bathing beach.

But Councillor Maurice Chapman today said "human dignity would not be preserved" if beachgoers bared all in the shire.

"Unadorned worms are preyed upon by birds," Cr Chapman told fellow councillors in a failed bid to stop the council progressing the nude beach plan to a public input stage.

"Whilst we may be animals we are superior to the others and we need to have human dignity."

Despite admitting he personally would not be seen starkers, Mayor Ray Duffy believes the nude beach is needed to "keep abreast of the times" and boost tourism.

"It is the year 2005 – Queensland is the only state in Australia with these (public decency) laws.

"They are from the Joh (Bjelke-Petersen) era ... they are old and prudent."

The secluded Coonar and Norville beaches near Bundaberg have been flagged as possible skinny-dipping sites.

The State Government has pledged to consider any proposal from the shire.

There are about 20 legal nude beaches in Australia but none in Queensland.

Free Beaches Australia's website states Alexandria Bay on the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Island, Mon Repos Beach near Bundaberg and Saunders Beach near Townsville are among Queensland's "unofficial" nude beaches.

Yeah, lemme tell you something about beaches in Queensland. My wife and I were there last summer. That law against nude beaches is really more of a guideline. :eek2:
