Careful I found out after receiving a 9300 laptop that was CRAP from dell that they now want 15% restock no matter what (damaged, dislike, etc...) So my advice is to not purchase from Dell. Evidentally they are getting a lot of computers returned to them.
Sorry if in the wrong thread, but thought the Deals folks should know!

Well, to quote Dell.com's return policy, found at http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/policy/en/policy?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~section=010 :
Restocking Fees: Unless the product is defective or the return is a direct result of a Dell error, a restocking fee of 15% may be charged on hardware, accessories, peripherals, parts and unopened software still in its/their sealed package, and on software that has not been downloaded if the software is delivered electronically.
That hardly sounds like what you're inferring. If the product is defective which I will assume includes items damaged in shipping, then there is no restocking charge. This charge seems nothing out of the ordinary for many merchants, B&M or online, in terms of its policy.
Yes I agree it sucks. But it's nothing out of the ordinary and nothing to lose sleep about. If they had 15% restocking fees on items that were damaged, I'd throw a big fit about it, but I'm OK with this mostly because Dell has many many good deals all across the technology gadgets and items.

I have never heard of a restock fee on unopened and new products. It defeats the principle as restocking fees are to counter the lowered price they can sell it for as a result of it being opened.

Usually at B&M stores, there is no restocking fee on peripherals, accessories, or software. I could understand the restocking fee on computers or laptops but not accessories or software.

Whenever I have had to return a product to Dell, they offer to let me keep it for a 10-20% discount so they don't have to take it back. If I still want to return it they give me a full refund (even on one item that I had for over 21 days - their typical return window).

Here's some inside info on the Dell restocking - from a UPS point of view. A friend works at UPS, a has told me of how many people order multiple Dell systems - only to return all but one system. It seems as through some people can't make up their minds when ordering, so they make up their mind at the UPS depot with the will call ticket in their hand.
Of course the unclaimed one costs Dell to 1) pay for shipping to the customer and 2) cost Dell to return it back to them... even when it is sealed.
Add to that, the number of people who actually take them all home and keep the one they like - that sends the returns back to be refurbished/restored/repacked and sold through their outlet store for cheap.
Just a case of people taking advantage of Dell, ruining it for the honest people.
