OK..i'm sure a lot of you go through the same dilema on a daily basis.
So here's the deal..I work in a office building that has normal hinged front doors. As a general courtesy to others, I'll generally hold the door open for the next person behind. But at what point do you go from being a nice guy to being a doorman? I don't mind holding it for people, but i HATE it when people take their sweet ass time making their way to the door.

It's up to you to gage how fast the other person is walking and decide if you should hold the door open.
One can't be expected to hold the door while the other strolls slowly from a block away.
That's extreme, but you get what I'm saying.

:stupid:
yeah, what nickel said, do the best to gauge their speed. sometimes, ppl walk slower b/c they feel bad having you to open the door for them.
i've got one better though. back in high school, i would do that for everyone. one day, this girl was like, "WHAT?! u think i'm a weakling that can't open a door for myself?" so i let it slam in her face. sheesh!
if i see somebody behind me, close enough that i won't be standing there holding the door then i do .....BUT if they are way behind then i just leave the door opne ....no need to hold it!!! :)

Gauge their speed and try to make sure it slams them in the face as they walk by.

If she is cute and I want to get a good look at her butt I'll wait a little longer to hold the door.

I hate it when people think an open door is an invitation to cut me off. For example, where I normally get gas there are two glass doors side-by-side. Inside there is a small entry way, followed by two more side-by-side doors. Quite often as I'm leaving, I'll start opening the outside door, and someone will quickly duck in, nearly knocking me over. Why the heck didn't they just open the door beside me? Weird...

:stupid: She makes a good point. If I see someone who's about 10-20 ft away, but they're moving quickly, I'll wait. If there's someone 5-10ft away, but moving slower than mollassess, I will just push the door further open as I'm walking away. I still get the thanks, and I'm not stuck there waiting.

The correct response in this situation is: "No, I think you don't have enough common sense to be allowed to operate anything with moving parts unsupervised. Now please step inside, it would be embarasing to me if anyone saw me speaking to you."
