Hello~

my parents own a really big house and the dudes at Fry's told us
WG602 would serve us well - and it didn't.

we have main internet connection upstairs and wg602 would not reach the computers in the office downstairs. (12 ft vertical... 30-40 ft horizontal with wall, wooden floor/stairs)

Does anyone know if I can get better connection off new router/APs like the ones from linksys WRT54GX.. or anything similar?

I'd like suggestions please.. and perhaps alternatives...

wg602 returend already.. haha

is the wireless AP in the center of the house? or is the office on one end of the house and the ap on the other? is the ap in a high location away from cordless phones and other apliances?

i would use mutiple AP'a and maybe a differnt antenna

AP is one somewhat close to the center of the house but upstairs,
no phones are near by at all
office is downstairs... I guess if AP is at the center, the office is located northwest from the AP.

what brand name should i look for?

3 things can help:

1) external antenna - look for an AP with a removable antenna. In the middle of the house you can hook up an omnidirectional antenna & cover most areas. In this case you want to make sure you're authenticating your connections, so your neighbors don't leech.

2) multiple APs - you can wire multiple APs (if you can run the cable), or you could consider a wireless bridge to boost the signal.

3) high power PC cards - a PC card with a very high receive power will make up for a weak signal, but they'll cost you - http://www.demarctech.com currently makes the most powerful ones. One of those will set you back $100-150, but you'll get signals that other cards can't.

Or buy a repeater!

buy a linksys wrt54G or wrt54GS and flash it with the talisman firmware. this will allow you to bump the output power from 28mW to 251mW, reducing the need for an external antenna.

Not likely in the home environment...

I posted a thread awhile ago about how sucky the Linksys "repeater/access point" was... and for home use, it was one of the few (maybe only) units available for home networking.
