We were buying a ticket for my wife visit her family, and I noticed that when we were doing the seat selection, some of the seats were labeled "Premium". It said that they varied by airline what you need to sit in those, but it would allow anyone to select that as their seat. It said it was at the Airlines Descretion of whether or not to allow you to sit there.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Should I put her in those seats or is she going to get moved to some crappy seat if I try it. She will be flying on United.

The airline usually keeps the seats toward the front - the ones that let you off the plane faster - for frequent travellers. If you get silver or gold status as a frequent flier you could expect those better seats.
If they let you pick them then go ahead and try. She might get moved but then again she might not.

probably the front seats, not just because they let you off the plane faster but also because it's marginally less noisy there

And you don't get the wonderful bonus of sitting next to and smelling the toilet.

On United and Ted flights those premium seats are their Economy Plus seats... 5 inches more legroom compared to regular coach seats. It's actually quite nice. Take em if they are offered to you...
