So I joined a pool league yesterday and played at the local tavern. A friend of mine needed another player in case someone is missing for the night, so he asked me to join.

I told him I was mediocre, but it didn't matter because there is a rating system (1-9) and I would be playing people of my similar skill.

Well, I played this guy who just learned pool a year ago. He was unemployed, had a lot of spare time and practiced constantly. Man, did he ever blow me away!! And he was supposed to be at the same skill level as me.

I don't know how long it will take me to get better, but I don't want to be a hindrance to the team while I am learning. So I am debating whether to stay in the team, practice a lot or just forget about it for now.

Fortunately, the guy who invited me used to be a pro, has a pool table in his basement and said I can come over anytime to practice, which is pretty cool.

back during my undergrad days, my dorm had a couple pool tables. me and freelance would stay up into the wee hours of the night just playing. i guess you could have considered us "decent" back then. now, i probably can't even run 3 balls in a row.

as with anything, you only get better with practice. if you got the time, go for it. it's a great social activity.

I used to play pool in college all the time. I have two cues and I used to be really good. Also, we had a pool table in our house when I was in high school.

Go over to your friend's house and practice. You will get better by practicing and by having your friend give you some tips and lessons.

If you go to pool halls during lunch hours on weekdays (if you can), you can get pretty cheap rates, so that may be a good way to practice and grab some grub at the same time.

Tell your friend and his team that you don't want to be a hindrance and see how they react. They may ask you to leave the team or they may help you practice when you can. I say give the whole thing a shot and see how it goes. Who knows, maybe you'll find a new calling!

When I was in the Army I played all. the. time.

Like, all the time. Seriously.

And back then I was a cute little thin thing and I was able to hustle the tables pretty good. Drinks, money, etc.

But now...it's like I've never played in my life. Weird, eh?

I say stick with it. They knew you weren't Fats when you started and if they are willing to help you get better, go for it.

so did u play all the time? or just some of the time? :P

johnnymk, are u playing for fun, or is it a more "serious" thing?

if it's just for fun, then just have fun with it.

if there's prizes/$ involved, then it's up to you. but you'll have chances to practice, so why not?

i agree; if your friend offered to open up his basement to you for practice, i say go for it. pool is one of those things that's actually lots of fun to practice, and the more you play, the more you'll develop an eye for angles and english and all that jazz. and good luck with your league...

I play pool just about every weekend. It's a fun game. When I worked at Activision (where I learned to play) every break there was a game, and at lunch we could squeeze in 3 or 4. It was fun.

Practice makes all the difference though, so I would take up your friends offer, and take it to him in his basement ;)

The reason I joined is because he claimed it was just for fun. But a free trip to Las Vegas is a possibility. So there is a pot at the end of the rainbow. Plus everyone is better than me.

I am seeing him tomorrow night and I will ask him if I should stay in.

oh yeah, totally. i know that one. it's the one where you're supposed to hit the 9 ball first and then the rest in reverse order... yeah...
