burz, i've been noticing that your pics tend to be a bit on the soft side. don't you use a d70? what's up?

i use a Canon 20D
Generally if you see softness chances are it's a night shot, and i didn't have a tripod. For example the colesium pic, that was a 2 second handheld exposure.
In this shot i there is some softness due to my surroundings, i couldn't get a steady shot.
But elsewhere you won't see any softness, sometimes you will see noise due to jpg compression and resizing, i generally resize down to about 640xwhatever and save as jpg compression 7 which is medium, so people don't reprint my shots from the internet. Sort of a safety

aaah, ok. didn't know your shots were handheld. that would explain it a bit. not too bad for handhelds by the way. also, canons tend to be a bit softer than nikons straight from the camera anyways. i know that's how it is with my rebel xt..but that's how i like it, since i like to do a lot of post-processing.

Ah ha . . . knew it . . . was going to ask if that was Milan. It's been years since I've been there, but I remember it.
I'm going to be dragging my 20d (as well as newly ordered tripod) with me on some trips soon. I'm hoping the tripod and head come before I leave for Slovenia and Croatia on the 15th.

Long time since I was in Milan. As I remember it took about an hour to ride my bike from the center to the edge of town. Did you visit the Davinci Last Supper? They were still working on restoring it then. Cameras allowed but no flash. Pictures in my Minolta A200 are fairly soft usually. I just learned to use the unsoft mask so that will help. I don't see any sort of competition for the Pic of The Day. I am enjoying someone elses shots for a change! And very nice work too! I have a desk top tripod that I use on occasion.

The combination is probably a bit more than I need right now. If I were in NYC, I probably would have just picked up something like a Slik 700dx (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=131427&is=REG) , but I couldldn't find any B&M or online retailers selling it in Europe. To have one sent over here would have cost a grip, so it wouldn't have been a value. So, I splurged a little bit - will hopefully have them for quite some time.
Also, will likely be a bit to lug around on trips, but not quite ready to spend the money on Carbon Fiber legs or anything. Maybe sometime in the future I will upgrade.
