Dog Saves Family, But Can't Help Furry Friends

3 Family Members Saved But Dog, Cat Die In Lakewood Fire

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- A small family dog is being credited with a huge heroic act -- saving a Lakewood family from fire.

Firefighters believe a candle left burning in the garage sparked the blaze, which started just after 5:30 a.m. When the flames began d spreading, Sadie, the family's 15-pound terrier mix, woke the family up with her incessant barking and all three family members got out safely. Unfortunately, another dog and cat did not make it out alive.

"Clearly, had that not happened -- I don't want to speculate on the exact time, but within a short span of time -- there could have a been a loss of life in this incident," said Gary Armstrong of the West Metro Fire Department.

The Lakewood house was badly damaged by the garage fire.

When firefighters arrived at the house, located in the 2300 block of Bell Court, they found the attached garage completely engulfed in 30-foot high flames. The fire was so hot that the house next door had melted siding, 7NEWS reported.

It took firefighters 10 minutes to bring the fire under control and about an hour before the fire was completely extinguished. The garage was destroyed and the home suffered extensive damage.

The family said even though they had smoke detectors, they didn't hear the alarms and that's why they are grateful for the big actions of Sadie in waking them up.

"I'm really pretty blessed," said Dave Thorn. "My family is OK and that's what matters to me. All the material things (are) irrelevant."

Probably was the main dogs intent to have the family all to himself... as he got rid of both of his competitors (the other dog and the cat) for the attention of the family.

I'd question the dog to find out how the fire REALLY started... :hmm:

Ummm hmm... yeah.... :shifty:

Unless the cat was trying to 'take care' of the dogs and only got one and the other one somehow locked it up somewhere... hmmm... too much speculation. :shifty:

The cat clearly did it, but the cat's plan didn't quite work out, as the dogs discovered the plot. The one dog was sacrificial enough to detain the cat, while the other dog saved the family. Case closed.

Most cats are probably too smart to go out and get themselves killed...

Worst case scenario for a "cat plan"... everyone else dies BUT the cat. Cats always live, hence "9 Lives". But that dastardly dog made sure that the cat used up all 9 of those lives at once.

I still say... "Question the dog". He's lookin' mighty guilty. :shifty:

I dunno... this story sounds pretty messed up. The family did a stupid thing and the house catches on fire. One of their pets saves the family and instead of trying to save their pets, they save their own skin and leave the pets to die. That sounds kinda messed up to me.

Oh, and btw... did anyone else think it's kind of weird that they had smoke detectors but slept through that noise to be wakened up by the sound of a tiny dog barking?

No, not if the fire in the garage caused a lot of carbon m/d to spread through the house first, which happens sometimes. As to 'saving' the pets, set your garage on fire and see how fast it goes up. What with cars, gas cans, oil, paint cans all in a typical garage, they don't burn slow.

Who leaves a candle burning in the garage?

I think the cat did it too. Moreover, I think the cat dragged a dead cat from the street into the house before the fire so everyone would think it died.
The cat is probably sitting in some unsuspecting person's lap right now, just a few blocks away. Totaly unaware that the feline fiend is plotting to kill them in another fire.

I guess that's the 102nd use for a dead cat.
