Scholarships.
Well, that's what the major benefactor of the University of Duluth's new science building wants.
LINKY (http://www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/news/local/12791411.htm)
In brief: Three pre-teen boys caused $8,000,000 in damage to the soon-to-be-opened science building at UMD. They were caught, plead guilty, and sentenced to time in a youth center.
Now the guy who donated money to build the center is floating the idea of providing scholarships for the ne'er to wells to attend the same college.
In related news: The US is offering all Al Qaida members citizenship and a group hug.

Hmmm... Making understand what they damaged might, assuming they have a concious, make them feel exceptionaly guilty about it.

"Never"? Guess I'm just not too familiar with that kind of terminology. :heh:
Either way, now that shows some strong moral support for the guy to even think of helping some folks to sought to do harm to what he was trying to build.
The "turning of the other cheek" is definitely a lost value... glad to see someone with the will (and funding) to at least make the effort to teach them the wrongs of their ways.

Damn I have to go destroy something now, way more fun than filling out a FAFSA.

Ne'er? :hmm:Sorry, missed my typo...
ne'er-do-well (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=ne'er-do-well) : an idle worthless person.
Forgiveness is fine, but this is a slap in the face to all parents and students who work hard to attend UMD. I'm all for scholarships for disadvantaged youth, but I'd rather they were reserved for disadvantaged youth who attempt to work hard and achieve.
This wasn't a rock thrown through a window. These idiots spent hours in the science building trying to invent the most destructive methods possible to destroy the place.

See my previous post. :D
Fear leads to anger... anger leads to hate... hate leads to SUFFERING!!!
I see your point... and in spite of that, the benefactor STILL wants to help them... Now that's living in the way of "WWJD".

I'd rather see the benefactor provide another $8 million for scholarships to help hard-working (academically) deserving students attend the school.

aaack! how dare he defy social convention! oh noes! he's taking a novel approach to rehabilitating them!!!! :hihi:

there are a lot of those already... and there's room for both. it's a big world.
i sincerely doubt this is going to spawn an epidemic of scholarships for f***ups, so no need for any panties to be in knots over this ;)
besides, this saves money in the long run... weigh a life spent going to college and then (likely) making a decent wage vs. a life spent alternately on welfare, in the courts, and in prisons...
why not give it a try and see what happens? it's rich-boy's money, he can do what he wants with it. he's already provided tons of money for the deserving. he wants to give this a whirl, more power to him. :)
besides... there are thousands of people who have college degrees because of their (daddy's) money despite a complete lack of merit. if this guy is throwing in the added bonus of an attempt to turn criminals into productive members of society, he's already a cut above the pack :P

:stupid:
yep. jesus, too, took a ton of flack for inviting sinners to his table... :P
Mark 2:13-17
Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. "Follow me,"Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and "sinners" were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the "sinners" and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: "Why does he eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?"
On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
i'd say that's some history worth repeating ;)

I would like to know how they did $8M in damage.

Most of the damage was caused by water. They stopped up the drains and let the water run. It was 18 hours before the vandalism was discovered (the building was not yet opened). Three floors were flooded.

You'd probably have an easier time infiltrating the White House.
