I know there is a website called "Myspace" which was the cause of some problems a while back. (Grandparent searching for grandchild found disturbing information involving a death threat if memory serves)
What exactly is the site and what is it for? What would you consider to be normal posting on that site....normal age of poster? I dont want to say anything more before i find out some info.

I got drawn into myspace when someone (I suspect one of my cousin's sons) signed up on myspace but listed my gmail account as an email address. Once when I logged into gmail, I had a bunch of invite requests junking up my mailbox. Well, since I owned the email address, it wasn't too hard for me to go into myspace and change the password on the account. "Matt" suddenly turned very rude toward all the girls that were contacting him.... heh heh.
Anyway, it is mainly geared around college age, but high schoolers are involved as well. A lot of trash, if you asked me.

Well, you're supposed to 18 to register but kids just fool it by entering a false birthdate. Some of my sisters friends have myspace accounts and they're twelve. The site is a networking site like friendster and also a blogsite as well. (the crappiest one, IMO)

it's a "networking" site sorta like Friendster or Orkut or any number of others. you invite friends, write pseudo-blog entries, post bulletins, etc.
one thing that sets it slightly apart is that a lot of musicians have been using MySpace to showcase their stuff. not just up-and-coming acts either; some big names are creating MySpace accounts.
oh yeah, and it's owned by Rupert Murdoch now... :shifty:

Ok but are the limits as to what is supposed to be posted there? Such as, being scantily clad? Obviously they have no age verification that works.

I think someone has linked me to seeing booby on that site before. If you're concerned about young eyes seeing such, I'd suggest keeping them away.

Yeah, as said above it's a networking site mainly aimed at teens. I had just started up a MySpace account and about a week later my university got "the facebook" which is a much more organized, less crap, mature networking site.
Most college students who go somewhere that doesn't have "the facebook" uses MySpace for their networking stuff. It can be useful for those people, and also as mentioned above, for bands. It's similar to purevolume in that effect of being able to post your music and network to people who might be interested in listening to it. But, more often than not, My Space pages are crapily (bright, annnoying colors) thrown together by highschoolers.

My brother runs the server farm for myspace :)
I don't myspace, but some (read: a lot) of my co-workers are addicted.

i think you'll find, by the content i've filled out, how seriously i take this site. i was invited a while back, but i don't usually log in unless i get a random friend request or comment or something. my little 17-year-old cousin and his friends, however, seem to enjoy it.

Both my wife an I are on MySpace. We initially got on to keep up with our kids and their friends. I swear, we learned more about what was going on in their lives by reading their blogs than they'll ever tell us...

WhiskeyPapa, I disagree with you on a whole lot of things, but you are a damn good parent.
A friend of mine asked me about leting his 13 year old daughter use MySpace. I strongly recommended against it. Without active supervision it would be a disaster waiting to happen. Basicaly it's a bunch of kids you don't know socializing with your child. Growing up, if my parents didn't know a kid and his parents, I wasn't allowed to go out and do things with them. I think it was a good rule.

:stupid: Although I think I've said that before. Same with Markel...I may disagree with you guys about politics, etc. but no denying that you're both some damn fine parents.

we're not in kansas anymore grimm...
i'm not a parent, but dude, i think the parenting skills that were used on us aren't going to fly in this new world.... (making the asumption that you too are in your 20's and don't have any kids yet)

Um, no...I think that rule can still be pulled off. My parents had a similar rule, and I know some younger parents that have the same rule for their kids.
The world really isn't that new, sorry.

I joined up with G|A when I was about eighteen, or nineteen? Whatever.
PWird, Yoss, Hang10, etc. They joined pre-age of majority. How many of their parents monitored their online behaviors? They're lucky they weren't (all that) stupid and there aren't any predators here.
It's actually pretty scary if you think of it.

if you've ever peed after eating asparagus, then you'll know why i chose that particular vegetable.
GIRL MURDERED from a guy she met on MYSPACE .....
Taylor Behl, a student from Virginia, has been found murdered. Her body turned up yesterday in a shallow grave and was confirmed to be that of Taylor Behl. The prime suspect, Ben Fawley claims to be an amateur photographer and is being held by authorities. She has a MySpace page and to see the comments from people while she was missing right up to finding the body is pretty sad and intense. Keep in mind that there are over 30 million people on this network so the odds are pretty good that you'll interact with some psychos and possibly some predators along the way (male or female). Just be careful and use common sense especially if you are female. I know 1st hand the amount of e-mails that women get every single day, half from guys posing as amateur photographers.
This's sad. Don't ever meet guys alone! Come on..
Check out her My Space profile, which is still up and all the comments her friends have been leaving her from the day she disappeared up until today.

Not sure if she really did meet this guy on myspace but either way be careful w/your kids & who they talk to! ......
