Hi everyone..a friend of mine just sent me an excel document that I need to change some wording on...unfortunately, he password protected parts of it and does not remember the password. Do you know of anyway I could unprotect the document so I can get my changes in and send back to him? He needs it by this afternoon.
(he's an architect and it's for a project I'm contributing on)

It's software, so that's where it goes. :) Good luck.

"Software forum" usually...

And you may be SOL if he has locked the spreadsheet and has forgotten the password... It's not a good thing to lock them and forget the password.

Is it password protected to read? or just to edit and rewrite. If its only set to not be written or edited, can't you copy the cells onto a new document and use the new one? I'll test this out and get right back to you.

Edit: Well if you can see the cells, you can copy paste them into a new file..
I dont know how severe your problem is. If you can open and not edit, then you can copy paste and work on a new file. It its read protected.. umm i dont think its gonna be working anytime soon... I had a program and i still might that attempts to find it by brute force, but if the password is long, it will take hours or days...

There was a way to manipulate the file. I just forget how to do it.

Related to the Open Office (http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92475) thread, if you DL Open Office and use it to open the Excel file it'll ignore the cell protection. You should be able to edit the sheet that way.

I had a similar situation with an Excel form (locked cells contained an error) and it worked for me. YMMV...
