I have a laptop that when I turn on, checks memory and stalls at the CD ROM check. It gives me something like :

ATAPI CD-ROM: MA]SMI]-R_-C_=1?1 - - - - - - -

And when I try to enter the set up, it stops as well. I know that my burner is broken because it won't burn anything anymore. Is there a way I can bypass the CD ROM check? I got it to start up properly once and my CD ROM was missing from the list of drives at that time.

TIA!

Open your box & unplug the CD drive. If you already know it's bad, get rid of it.

I was going to recommend going to the BIOS and not allowing it to have any proprietary use on startup and possibly disabling Plug and Play. But I had a bad CD-Writer once and it screwed up everything. As soon as I removed it, the computer worked OK.
