Insprion 5100 network adapter

I've been fixing my buddy's Insprion 5100 laptop and the network adapter is acting funny. When I plug the laptop straight to the cable modem the network adapter works. But if I plug it in to my router it says that i'm not connected. The cable works cause i'm using the one that's plugged into my computer. Has anyone else experienced this.

Check the security settings on the router.

Yeah...had the same problems with a linksys router and the router ended up being bad. Updated the firmware and everything but it didn't work still.
