Teacher Reportedly Beaten Over Bad Grade

BRANDYWINE, Md. - The mood inside Gwynn Park High School is apprehensive after a science teacher was beaten with a baseball bat -- apparently over a bad grade.
John White, spokesman for Prince George's County Schools, says the 10th grader went into a class and beat the teacher on the hands and head with the bat.
White says a police officer was fast on the scene as it was unfolding.
Students at the school in Brandywine say a bad grade motivated the attack. They tell Channel 7 the accused student was upset about a low grade that would have thrown him off the soccer team.
School officials won't confirm a motive for the attack.
The teacher has been released from the hospital.
The student has been expelled and charged with assault and released to the custody of his parents.

Well the kid won't be playing soccer at this school at all now.

Yeah, NBC 4 said something this AM about the teacher's walking out. Can't say I blame 'em.

Yeah, being a teacher is dangerous. In my junior high, we had a teacher that was beat up by a bunch of kids. He didn't quit his job afterwars but I've heard that he is a complete psycho now (throwing chairs across the room type psycho).

Why does this sort of thing happen so often now? A couple of decades ago this would have been a really rare event. Any ideas why kids think they can do what ever they want and not get in trouble for it?

8 years ago the asst principal had two horses killed (beaten to death) after she punished a few jocks over some bad grades and other stuff.
some kids are out of control.

Hint: their parents.
Parents today don't want to invest the time, energy, resources, etc., to raise children the right way. It's pretty apparent all around us.

I wanted to get someone else to say it first. Yes I totally agree that it is the parents fault.
these kids just have the example @ home! ......like all those stories about parents getting very angry @ kids' games and going after their coaches ....makes the kids think that they can use anger to deal w/a situation that they don't agree with! ....so sad, very very sad!

I don't know if I can blame the parents in this case without more information.

I think it's more of a generalization about kids today...not this exact case.

We just had this discussion you can see down in the thread, American's are Rude. Anyway thats exactly what it is, parents not taking enough time. Its that we always make excuses for kids these days rather than fess up to the real issue whatever it may be. Its not video games, or TV, or movies, or sports, or whtever else people want ot blame it on. Its the fact that kids are no longer disiciplined like they used to be and can get away with murder these days. I watched plenty of violent movies, played plenty of violent video games, played sports, and etc. I turned out about as normal as normal gets. The kid will get put in Juvy if that, and then have his record sealed. If you aren't going to take the time with your kids and be invested in their lives and talk with them, then please don't have them, or give them up to someone who can. JMO

Ummm.... I would have to say there is a signifficant difference between rude and assault with a deadly weapon.
While parents are responsible for failing to teach their children how to behave, I think we should still hold the kids fully responsible for the act. Otherwise we end up with a bunch of kids that learn that they are not responsible for their actions, it's all their parents fault.

Parents led by example and taught their kids that personal accountability doesn't exist anymore.
You see this people all day long at the office. "It's not my fault ____ didn't get done..."
You see it in lawsuits. You see it in legislation. God forbid this be considered flame baiting, but I saw an awful lot of it after Katrina.
It's no wonder the kids don't know how to handle a problem. It's just easier to blame somebody else and take action on that.

i don't think that we're necessarily saying that it's the parents fault that this kid or any other kid did a violent act but simply because these parents aren't teaching their kids any better ....they are responsible for their kids' actions, don't you think?
we might not be able to control what kids do BUT we sure as hell can teach them how to handle different situations in life .....right?

a) it's not exactly common now.
b) it's always happened. It happened in the 50's too, and it even happened in ye olden days. Hell, teachers were killed in some towns. People are nuts.

I disagree.
The parents failure is not teaching them how to behave.
The act is entirely the responsability of the "child"
The act of vilence is merely evidence of the parents failing to do their job, not the failure itself.

As an administrator with school age children, you would be amazed at what some K-4th graders are doing and levels of violence

I was on the phone with my friend last night and we were joking around that she should have a softball bat in her classroom (she's an English teacher/head softball coach) to send a message of discipline to her kids.
I emailed her with the article just now and told her that maybe she should actually consider the bat idea. Good defense tool it seems like.

Our cars tend to be the first victims. :|
We have a few students that have rap sheets. If a student with an assault/sexual assault/(a few other biggies) is in our classes, we are supposed to be told and can request a second adult be in the class.
We also have a contract stipulation that we can appeal/sue the school district to not have a dangerous student in the building.
But...mainly I worry about my paintjob.

I think kids these days have figured out that there's no serious jail time when they are under 18 and therefore not responsible. Yes some do get charged as an adult but I think the mindset is I'm not 18 so I'll get a slap on the wrists.
