I got my Cannon SD500 in it is a 7.1 MP camera but on the highest resolution there is alot of the image croped off when printing a 4x6 is there a resolution setting i can use to have none of the picture cropped off when printing a 4x6 or to have a smaller portion of the image croped off when printing a 4x6.

It is going to suck to have to recrop every picture i want to have a 4x6 made of.

Thanks

You have no choice, really, since it's a different aspect ratio between 4x6" and 2304x3072 resolution of a 7MP camera. You'll either get distortion if you resize them, or you'll have to manually crop them (manually so you can pick which areas to cut out).

I have the same issue - it's a pain,, but best results come from manual cropping.

this is what the camera specs say

Image Resolution 3072x2304, 2592x1944, 2048x1536, 1600x1200, 640x480, Postcard(1600x1200) this is a special 3:2 ratio mode for making 4x6 in. prints.

would it be better to shoot in the 1600x1200 mode or 2592x1944 that is fairly close to 2856x1904 setting on my kodak camera at work that prints a 4x6 with no cropping. or would it be better to shoot at the highest resolution and crop manualy.

also is there a good program to use to crop i have been using photo shop. kind of a cumbersome program.

aspect ratio is the same is on a tv and an hd. in order for a HD size picture fit into a regular TV, they need to cut off the sides of the picture. Just like in a picture, cept the picture usually chops off the top and bottom. bottom line, you can't fit a square into a retangle without the picture looking skinny or fat. if you want your pictures in 4x6, there will need to be some cropping

Have you tried one of the ACDSee products for printing photos?

Most SLR's have 3:2 aspect ratios, which is good for 4x6 printing, but for any other size, the ratio doesn't conform and requires white borders or cropping. If you don't mind having bigger prints, just find another print size that matches your format.

When you crop in PS, you can pre-set the crop ratio to be locked at 3x2 so that the crop window always conforms to that shape. It speeds things up a lot.

The printers usually crop a little anyways too which can be a little frustrating if you have carefully cropped it the way you want (either in the original shot or in processing). I like to frame it when I shoot it, but now try to leave a little extra around the edges.
